The Hobbit Hole V - Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...
ecurbh

Posted on 12/11/2003 2:07:57 PM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

I think I know the kind of church you're talking about, with the hives... went to an Assemblies of God when I was little and this particular church was far too much into the emotional rollercoaster, and praise band, thing for us. We're at a really traditional place now, maybe moreso than I expected to be... guess we're "frozen chosen" these days. But it makes me comfortable in church.

This church was actually putting down other chuches. They had a big Christmas fellowship at the Westin Hotel (a pretty top-of-the-line place). Parishioners each had to cough up $50 in order to go, and during the dinner the pastor was giving his sermon about how "we" were better, as we were worshipping God at the Westin, and not having a ham & bean dinner in the basement of "some old church".

Jess and I were so offended, we left.

This was, of course, preceeded by that day's sermon about how we all were "charged by God" to donate "no less than a hundred dollars" to the new wing of the church.

I'll take a ham & bean dinner any day of the week over that kind of pompous arrogance.

The subject probably won't even come up. It's a bit hard, 'cause I'd like to bring it up, but there's no real way to do it without dragging things down.

I spent a couple years in my own thoughts without talking much about Mom either when I thought it would just change the mood. I might sulk or go cry alone, but I didn't know if anyone else did. Dad actually mentioned it to me once, when he and I were in a rare moment, that he wondered why we never talked about ~it~. It opened the door and now we do. People are too shy and maybe feel to inarticulate to bring up bad things and so it remains the elephant in the room everyone walks around without acknowledging. I would guess they are thinking about it too, more than you think, and feel the same reluctance you do. Personally, I think it is not such a bad thing to bring her up, if it sombers the mood, that's OK... That is not always a bad thing.

The guys are prolly thinking about it too. But don't know what to say about their thoughts either.

In time and ~with practice~ including her in conversation, you can all talk better about her more often. For me now, Mom (and my grandparents) are beloved conversation... "Remember when this happened", or "Mom always did that" or "This part of this movie reminds me of Mom". There isn't a pregnant silence now when she comes up... but smiles, wistful ones, or sighs, but the best kind.... The kind when you remember to remember.

so long as it's understood that "manners" aren't feminine

A GENTLEMAN is always well mannered, and is most certainly a MAN!

I'm chivalrous to a fault...holding doors open, hat off indoors, standing when a woman enters the room, etc...

But I've got all the table manners of a Viking.

try a little sugar in yer rub... it turns into a crisp glaze a keeps in the juices... coat it with oil before you apply the rub...

made a brisket the other night... used charcoal and mesquite... rub was 2 tbsps salt, and paprika, tspn each of thyme, ground red pepper, black pepper, and sugar... sliced up three garlic cloves and inserted them into slits in the beef... it wuz great...

That's out of 99 right? I was only in the 70's (on account of the math)

Well, I thought that was out of 100... but I can ask him tomorrow. Keep in mind though, he only made 87 on the pretest.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

So prayers would be appreciated: that he chooses to fight the infection rather than the nurses, that he finds the strength to pull through, and for my mother who is very tired, a little angry, and a lot scared.

From our hearts, mouths and typing fingers to God's ears! You have my steadfast prayers!

Well, I will post it!

How is your mom doing? - Which treatment choice is she gonna choose? I thought it a little hard and unfair, to give choices.... I would turn to the doctor and say "You know more than I do! - You choose the best one!"
