The Hobbit Hole V - Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...
ecurbh

Posted on 12/11/2003 2:07:57 PM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Where Many Paths and Errands Meet...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

OT: back in the Carolinas I see, via O'Hare no less. The potato salad looks great. LSA wants to know if she can get your sausage-ball recipe.

Rosie; dang, that is getting right cold up there. Stay warm.

Sam: Florida does sound a bit more pleasant this time of year, hmm. no ice, no snow, and generally not below zero. Been fishing?

g'nad; thanks for the kind thoughts, brush hogging for deer plots or shooting lanes? :-) btw, the parts are on back order, expect them next week. (least that's what they always tell me.) Say hey to themrs, thegirl, theboy and the newboy.

Entmoot 2004: There and Back Again, a Hobbit's Tale

Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004

I was up in time to watch the sunrise. This time I took a blanket out on the back deck which was a bit damp. Did it rain last night? I don't think the neighbor's sprinkler system can reach this far. Got to see the whole thing this time. What little clouds there were went from mauve to pink to gold as the sun rose. I waited 'til the pinkish orange disc was up before heading inside.

The early risers (ecurbh, Hair, and Wneighbor) already had teh coffee made and were out by the pool so I joined them. The steaks were still with me this morning, so I skipped the bacon and just had pancakes, some hash browns, and the coffee. The kids are watching Finding Nemo. Most of us went down to the beach to see the shark that one of the fisher guys had caught. It was a little 2 1/2 foot shark that he had in water in a white bucket. He held the shark so the kids could pet it before he released it. One of the other fisher guys caught a shark about the same size (I thought it was a bit smaller) a few minutes later. I picked up some shells, a cool-looking rock and a gray feather. Woo Hoo! Souvenires!!! We're getting ready to go down to a park to see wildlife...hopefully a manatee. Hmmmm...do we have enough vehicle space? Yes! We have vehicle space...everyone went and we locked the Castle and went to this (state, I think) park called "Seashore Inlet", if I remember correctly. I resumed doing my lizard-sunning-on- the-rock thing. The others went wading or swimming. Brought my camera and took some shots....wonder how good these disposable cameras are. looking through the viewfinder you'd think they were using a wide-angle lens...and everything looks too far away. I guess I'll find out.

I didn't see any manatees. Saw birdses and parasails out in the distance. Poor Becky didn't like sharing the water with the crabs: I didn't like shareing the shore with the fire ants. Hehehe.....g'nad was down in a rocky pool doing his Smeagol fish song. Too bad he didn't have a fish in hand.

Hair and ecurbh brought Flat Frodo for some pictures. Poor Frodo is looking a little rough around the edges lately. There was this jetty....a line of rocks built out into the inlet that the took him out on. Wneighbor and ecurbh didn't seem to have too much problem traversing them. Hair said she was afraid of heights and made her way out there eventually. Frodo made it there and back (again) without getting wet....good ol' Frodo! However, to Ruthy, Becky, and I that little row of rocks looked like Emyn Muil with razor sharp rocks...and then it gets worse! Some rocks just didn't have nice, flat horizontal surfaces to step on, some were loose or wet and slippery....and there I was clambering about with that camera in one hand and all my medical insurance cards back in KC! We got as far as half way before getting some hobbit-sense and stopping and left the whole job to the more sure-footed (or the more cracked!)

We went back to the Castle for lunch. Lots of leftover steak that Hair slice for steak sandwiches, the cold cuts were out along with the taquitos, cookies, chips, salsa...had all kinds of food and drink to consume before tomorrow morning. Good Moot....no one really wants to leave but I miss my cat and Hair is worried about her horses. Some good news from teh outside world....ksen ahs a job interview on Monday.

We settle in to watch The Movie...and had a rousing chorus of "Nah, nah, nah, nah. Nah, nah, nah, nah. Hey, hey, hey. Good-bye!" as the elves made their way to the Grey Havens. I was half-watching The Movie and half-watching the fishing birds fold their wings, drop, and splash into the water. It must have been a good day for it...every few minutes or so you could see those splashes.

The next movie was Life of Brian. I did some FReeping and had "Entmoot send greetings by FReepmail to Constitution Day and mykdsmom. Heh....Melbourne is where MKM wants to move. There's some laundry and packing going on. On the thread, ItsOurTimeNow ordered the Bakshi LOTR just to see if it was as bad as we made out. Poor guy....I hope he's a drinking man. Mykdsmom replied a few minutes later...Hair was confused..."Who is this person?" We didn't hear from Constitution Day that evening although I expect "Entmoot" will eventually. I was careful to send greetings on the last night so he wouldn't have time to deploy the Thermobaric Bomb.

There was a run to the store for more snacks. Rosie got a case of Vernor's to take back to Vermont. There was discussion of who is taking whom to the airport tomorrow. It is decided: g'nad's folks will pick up his family so g'nad can take JenB, Rosie, Bilbo, and Mug in the van. Ramius, Hair, and ecurbh are taking Wneighbor and me and then hang out or something until they return the Explorer to the rental place. We have a plan.

More food, more drink. Rosie, Bilbo, and Mug played for a bit on the patio by the pool. G'nad got up and sang "And teh Band Played Waltzing Matilda." I think that's the name of the song....I'm really bad at remembering song titles. It was a song about Gallipoli by a veteran of that battle who had lost both legs....*sniff*. He also sang a spiritual/lullaby ...no I don't remember the name. More talking, more food. We had split up into two groups: one at the table outside the pool where they were talking about bands and one indoors. Hehehe...they took more pictures of Corin's shoes: first with g'nad wearing them and then a shot of the shoes on a float in the pool with a drink.

More food G'nad finished off the wings (with a little extra Tabasco sauce.) We started The Movie again - for the "Anime group" mostly. By the time it ended after 1:00, it was just me and ksen's daughter left. I made sure ecurbh's disc was out of the player before going to bed.

via O'Hare no less.

It was through Midway. Duhhhh....I just picked the direct flight and didn't bother to see which city it stopped in. Guess I should have figured it would be Chicago. The other city they stop at in the MCI/RDU run is Nashville and I would have had to make a connection there.

The potato salad looks great. LSA wants to know if she can get your sausage-ball recipe.

Aaaaggghhhh!!!! The sausage ball recipe is in KC! I'll send it when I get back. :) It seems that everything I need in KC is in NC and vice versa. I did find my thinsulate gloves in NC....the ones that make your fingers so fat that you can't use them very well.

Thank you for the kind words, but we're the ones indebted to you, and your family. We do the best we can with our humble talents. WN makes a mean salsa, and packs boxes of goodies loaded with love. The rest of us contribute as best we can, either financially, or sending off our own boxes of back-home goodies.

The pocket knife project was the answer to an unprayed prayer. It provides us a way of sending something tangible, useful, and built to last several lifetimes. Body armor, tomahawks, and fighting knives are outside our price range, but the CRKT pocket knife fills a small-but-important niche. We hope the knives will serve them in peacetime, too, and get handed down to their children and grandchildren some day.

In your travels through FR, if you come across other Freepers with family or friends serving in the military, send them over here so we can "adopt" their GIs, and send them a pocket knife, and edibles/reading materials/luxuries as time permits.

I've read about the great work that the people of Bangor do to welcome returning GIs on short notice. While the happy stories are great, it takes someone with a big heart to help those returning who thought they were forgotten. We applaud you for your effort.

Thanks for the post. Not as good as being there but I do enjoy reliving it. Thursday was a good day there!

Getting ready for bed here. Tomorrow's going to be bad, I'm going to have to do hours of homework after church. And then it's going to snow all night...

Nah...we had real wimmin there.

So ya don't think Ann is one of us real wimmin? I'm kinda a fan of hers myself.

When I went blonde my little brother was teasing me and asked me if I was trying to become an Ann Coulter clone or something. I figured it was a cool compliment. He thought I was just nuts! LOL

what an afternoon and evenin'...

we had last minute dinner plans, ended up invitin' friends over... made a brisket on the grill... spicey rub, smoked over mesquite... played "UNO Attack".... they just left...

I was lightin' the grill at around 1530, when I heard the stoopidbirds freakin' out in front... went around the house and come face tuh face with two HUGH dogs (boxers), one on my front porch... I yelled, they snarled, I went fer muh pistol, and was reminded I had taken it off 20 minutes before... I stooped and picked up a rock and they bolted down the lane... we got new neighbors across the holler, and I remember the lady sayin' she had a pair of boxers...

well... the stoopid birds were 30 feet up in the trees, and 4 chickens were under a bramble, 2 chickens were MIA; thegimpbird and one RIR... I grabbed muh pistol and a rifle and went in pursuit of the dogs... didn't catch 'em on my place

mrsnad decided it would be better fer her to pay the neighbors a visit, as I may have shot the dogs in their yard... she discovered the dog in their own yard, and the lady apologized, but said she didn't think it was her dogs... yeah right... I'm gonna go over tomorrow and pay a call...

on the bright side, the MIA birds wandered back an hour later, but they roosted immediately... they are freaked... me?... I'm tired of people lettin' their undisciplined mutts run on muh place and mess with my property... shoot shovel, and shut up is muh plan...

I'm with ya on that plan. My cousin and I were talking about similar situation he had last week. He shot the dog. It had been in their yard raising cain for a couple of weeks and attacked his mother-in-law's dog. They've got a 3 year old and a 5 year old. Opened the front door one day this week for the 5 year old to catch the bus to kindergarten and the dog was waiting and growled in attack mode. Jason shot him. Now the owners are up in arms wondering what happened to the dog. Jason ain't talkin' but he's also not about to put up with any other dogs. He figures he didn't buy 13 acres in the country to have to put up with other folks who don't keep their critters up.

Hi, I haven't had a chance to talk to you before. I've been out and busy for about the last months but would like to send your sons some of our Hobbit Hole care packages.
I try to send stuff out regularly to our soldiers from the Hobbit Hole. I won't be home and able to send for 2 or 3 more days but if you would freepmail me addresses I would love to send 'em some goodies.

God bless all 3 of 'em - and you 2 for raising such a fine family! -WN

Are you being flooded with stoopid city folks who feel that the entire countryside is now their doggie playground? Maybe mrsnad can politely inform the new folks that the countryside is also a freefire zone for unwelcome varmints. You do not raise chickens just to satisfy the killing instincts of misbehaved mutts.

it's not just the chickens, but two attacks in ten days has pretty well got me wired... they chase the deer, the turkeys, the quail, and could be a threat to thekids... let's face it... if those boxers growled and started comin' fer me, what would they have done to thekids?...

the new neighbors just moved here from Atlanta...

Sounds like people who bought dumb, untrained, aggressive dogs for "protection" in the city. Now neither the dogs nor the people can figure out how to live in the country.
