First I've seen this mentioned. There was a plane crash after takeoff in Jamaica Bay NYC right after 9/11 and I think it did some similar manuevers.

Flight 587 . . . American Airlines(?) . . . Yes, and the press/officials did similar maneuvers also - coming up with every lame excuse in the book to avoid the "T" word . . .
