LOS ANGELES -- A Diamond Bar, Calif., man who emigrated from India was in federal custody Monday for allegedly impersonating an immigration agent to attempt a bogus deportation of a woman from his homeland, authorities said.

Harpal Singh, 34, was arrested after he allegedly went to the woman's San Bernardino, Calif., residence to carry out the plan, according to U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officials.

Singh, who is charged with impersonating a federal officer and attempted kidnapping, allegedly intended to force 34-year-old Meena Kumari Krishan to return to India."
