Al Qaeda again threatens New York, Washington and Los Angeles - Daily Terror Threat

Monday, November 3, 2003

A new message was posted in the last few hours by the Jeddah-based al-Qaeda-linked Al-Islah (Reform) society calling on Muslims to flee New York, Washington and Los Angeles in advance of major al Qaeda attacks in those cities. This is revealed by DEBKAfile.

The message accuses the United States of predetermining its end (doom) by its policies. ?The Jews rule the Pentagon by remote control and (are the cause) of Muslims being killed in every corner of the world. The United States should therefore expect more blows.?

The message is signed on behalf of the al Bayan (The Threat) movement by ?your warrior brother, Abul Hassan al Khadrami?.

Our Muslim expert identifies the name of the signatory as belonging to a Yemeni from Hadhrameuth, the Bin Ladens? place of origin where Osama enjoys substantial tribal support.

DEBKAfile?s counter-terror sources stress that warnings appearing on these forums are taken both very seriously and with caution by the intelligence services keeping track of the terrorist network?s electronic traffic.

Last November, Jeddah-based fundamentalist forums addressed a message to an Al Qaeda member, saying whoever understands ? understands; whoever knows, knows, but we are marching towards an operation that will take us to Paradise. Three days later, the Mombasa Paradise hotel was blown up killing 12 Kenyans and 3 Israelis and a failed shoulder-launched Strela anti-air missile missed an Israeli airliner at Mombasa airport.

thanks for debunking the rumors... I gave up trying a few days ago.

It's interesting how the psychology works... this is testimony to the power of disinformation.

I don't know why the car bomb story was later denied.

Because it didn't happen.

The contemporaneous published reports mention the rumors of the day and point out that the rumors were quickly determined to be false.

These rumors were reported on TV and radio so we remember them as true. The corrections were lost as the events of that tragic day unfolded.

That's right. So what?

There are a number of factors that contribute to the health effect of radioactive materials. Half-life is one. Cobalt-60 has a half-life of 5.25 years. That means, essentially, it's radioactivity does "last a lifetime" if it is kept in the body that long.

Another factor is hold-up in the body, or the converse of hold-up, "clearance". Different chemicals, different compounds are cleared from the body at different rates. Those rates can be *greatly* effected by factors such as diet, general health, age, pregnancy, or by method with which they entered the body, and some others.

The faster a body can clear a poison, the better.

It hapens that metallic and ash-type dusts if injected into the lungs by respiration can have very low clearance. Check out "micro-fine" partiulates and alveoli in your research.

So as I said, a micro-fine particle of cobalt-60 in the lung's alveoli is essentially a death sentence, unless it is removed by surgery or a surgical-type delicate procedure called lavage. It is extremely likely to provoke a lung cancer. Cobalt-60 is a heavy gamma emitter.

It's interesting how the psychology works

I don't know, I'd say it frightening that people could believe such a huge "conspiracy of silence" would envelop the hundreds of thousands of people who live and work in the area.

It's like the true believers who think no airplane crashed into the Pentagon, despite the Post's published accounts of close to 100 people sitting in Crystal City office buildings or stuck in the daily 395 traffic jam directly adjacent to the Pentagon. Jeepers, my Verizon telephone guy heard it going right over his head (he must be a CIA plant).

Well, being in DC, and I remember them as false and as rumors, and as mistaken reporting in the heat of the moment.

Yes, people were afraid. Yes, the gridlock was insane. Yes, there was a secondary explosion from an LP gas tank at the Pentagon. But that's it.

How many times must I say it: no car bomb, no Mall fire, no "multiple explosions", no nothing but an airplane hitting the Pentagon. Period.

A car bomb may not have exploded but something happened at or near the State Department. Something shook their house which is very near the State Department. It might not have been a car bomb, maybe it was a jet breaking the sound barrier, but something loud happened near the State Department that shook this person's house and almost knocked her over.

There were generalized warnings before 9/11

AlQaeda has the money and the will to hire sufficient nuke technicians, scientists, engineers to maintain a number of nukes.

AlQaeda has the IQ available to manage such a project. They have the geographic isolation available in many areas.

I don't know how probable such is. But it's far from inconceivable.

I don't know if the allegations of 100 Russian smaller nukes running around loose is accurate or not. But I'm convinced quite a number have been acquired by AlQaeda. How many of those have they been able to maintain well? I don't know.

But I think it's fool hardy to assume there are 0.00.

ladyjane, you're not reading my posts above.

If I could feel and hear the LP tank exploding at 10:05AM from 3 miles south of the Pentagon, and see windows shaking from that explosion, why would your friend in Foggy Bottom not hear and feel and see that same explosion from 2 miles north of the Pentagon?

My experience was in front of a CVS pharmacy. Does that mean there was an explosion "near the pharmacy"?

No, it doesn't. There was no explosion "near the pharmacy" or "near the State Department."

Your assertion just doesn't jibe with the facts or the reality.

Did your friend find or see any debris? Was there a fire? Were there fire trucks? Injuries? Did anyone in downtown DC see anything of this kind? The answer to all of these questions is "No," because the explosion was an LP tank at the Pentagon.

Lt. Col. Ted Anderson : "We ran to the end of our building, turned left and saw nothing but huge, billowing black smoke, and a brilliant, brilliant explosion of fire." (...) One of the Pentagon's two fire trucks was parked only 50 feet from the crash site, and it was "totally engulfed in flames," Anderson says. Nearby, tanks full of propane and aviation fuel had begun igniting, and they soon began exploding, one by one. (...) Back in the building again, Anderson said he began "screaming and hollering for people as secondary and third-order explosions started going off. One of them was a fire department car exploding-I think my right eardrum exploded at the same time, and it unequivocally scared the heck out of me."

---------

One of the aircraft's engines somehow ricocheted out of the building and arched into the Pentagon's mall parking area between the main building and the new loading dock facility, said Charles H. Krohn, the Army's deputy chief of public affairs. Those fleeing the building heard a loud secondary explosion about 10 min. after the initial impact.

Angkor, I was replying to your earlier post. I am sure there were many rumors going around. I was just reporting what I heard from a first person source. She was talking to her husband at the Pentagon when an explosion happened. She was almost knocked over by it. He was at the Pentagon and wasn't hearing it except over the telephone. Maybe he was in a bunker.

Don't be foolish.

Functional nukes have to have non-stop maintenance. The old nukes of the Soviet Union are long-since useless, save for those that Russia has expended substantial efforts to maintain. The half-life of most nuclear triggers alone renders such devices inoperable after more than 4 months without maintenance, and every day that passes adds to the impurities in the fissionable core and shell materials (while simultaneously reducing the fissionable mass available).

And you don't just add a little "extra" uranium or plutonium to bring your device back up past the critical mass point. You've got to replace your core and reshape your shell, something that the entire might of NAZI Germany couldn't do in WW2 in the best labs in Europe.

These are *NOT* devices that can be maintained in caves by students who eeked by in their University classes.

Uranium and Plutonium are some of the most brittle metals on this planet. Shaping them is a technical feat beyond all but a dozen state governments in the very best labs under the very best conditions. These metals are also subject to corrosion/rust, and their radiation greatly impacts the electronic circuitry and conventional explosives used in such nukes.

Moreover, if they had them, they would have long ago tried to use them. We would have already seen a "fizzle" in one of our major cities by now.

What you need to spend your time thinking about is how we are going to handle the ensuing panic after the terrorists get a nuclear fizzle/dirty bomb. That much they can and very possibly will do. Repeating Hiroshima is still beyond them, however.

And whether or not there was "chatter" between isolated terrorist cells prior to 9/11 is beside my point. My point was that the terrorists didn't go out of their way posting public messages in on-line forums bragging about 9/11 prior to the attacks. Surely most adults around FR can discern the difference between "chatter" and public bragging.

Likewise, this Daleel chap is making another intellectual mistake by not only bragging about a nuclear attack prior to it happening, but also by claiming that it will come in the way of an old, long-since expired Soviet nuke. Anyone schooled in even the basics of physics understands that 1980's era nukes are nothing more than dirty bombs today unless they have had non-stop maintenance in the best of labs by the brightest of highly skilled people.

Moreover, the third intellectual mistake by Daleel is that of bring up nukes at all. The U.S. has some 13,000 nuclear warheads on hand right now, and it would be genetic suicide for an external foe to give us an excuse to blast a continent or two or three (the only way to be sure) with those nukes.

So throw us into that briar patch...
