Creation vs. Evolution
10-30-03 | J. Greene

Posted on 10/30/2003 8:05:55 AM PST by J. Greene

I am starting this thread to get both Creationist and Evolutionist point of views, and what each side thinks as of proof of their point of view. I personally believe in Creation as the way the Bible teaches it in six literal days.

If you take this thread, or the one-day-wonder who posted it seriously, I've got a Nigerian colleague who is anxious to deposit $60 million in your account.

I stopped doing that after the last three fell through. Besides, I'm too busy trying to figure out why my checkbook won't balance.

I can also tip you off to some sure-thing hot stocks and get you loads of Viagratm in 24 hours without a prescription. I've got a can't-lose weight-loss potion, and I can sell you some pills that are guaranteed to enhance your ... ah, package by several inches. Oh, don't forget -- interest rates are down, and you can consolidate your debts, enlarge your bust, and meet willing young teens who are dying to date you.

But first, you must prove your worthiness to participate in these opportunities. You must take this thread seriously, as a genuine inquiry by a truly serious newly registered freeper, one who is not here as a troll. Do that, and all shall be yours.

Well, darn it, I want to take you up on the offer, but I kind of blew my cover with posts 8 and 15. I practically called J Greene a clueless newbie. Even if I seem to take him seriosuly now, he'll know I'm just faking it to get an enhanced membrum virile and a no-money down time-share on the Outer Banks.

You've blown it at several levels. Not only have you forsaken all the wondrous benefits I have to offer, but you've walked away from what could have been a truly deep and meaningful cyber relationship with J.Greene, who is probably a sensitive, sincere, wisdom-seeking fellow, who came here really trying to reach out to you for some information, only to be slapped down unfairly, and judged to be a loathesome, trolling clown from some FR-bashing website.

Maybe we can do one of those poll thingies

Is he:

  1. a sensitive, sincere, wisdom-seeking fellow
  2. a loathesome, trolling clown from some FR-bashing website
  3. a clueless newbie
  4. what a DesiU-er dresses up as for Halloween
Think JR would put this on the sidebar?

You forgot 5: or 2, 3 and 4 of the above.

Because it sure isn't #1.

And I'm outta here, oh and Patrick, that, interest rates are low, thing, can I get a piece of that?

Actually, today was the first time I ever heard of this site at all. This is also the first time I ever joined a forum like this. I want to gain knowledge on what both sides think.

I did the same thing. Back on December 12, 2000, as everybody was waiting with bated breath for the USSC ruling on the Florida Recount, I made my first post (not reply, but post) to FR. I asked how tight the bond was at FR between religion and conservatism. The post ended up spanning two threads and getting around 400 replies, nearly all of them thoughtful and civil.

I was lucky. If I tried that today I might be banned. Since I'm still here, nearly three years later, it's clear I wasn't just trying to stir up trouble. But at the time a few viewed me with suspicion. I encourage you to take it in stride, as your due. There have been too many trolls masquerading as sincere posters. So you have to contribute for a little while before people stop questioning your motives.

It's par for the course. It's a very cool place, FR, even if I am flummoxed by some of the decisions made by the mods. We all are, at some point, I think. But unlike some, I won't take my ball and go home. Some things are worth sticking around for, even if you don't always agree with the guy in charge. America is one of them. FR is another.

I saw a little bit of some of them, but no, I didn't bother to check out what had been stated before. I just started this area, to learn more myself and be able to express my views.

This Thread (Forum) is not an area to discuss sales of perscriptions or drugs. But to discuss Evolution and Creationism. Thank you.

You are right that I am sincere about wanting to learn more about Evolution and Creationism. I only want to learn about what the opposing sides believer to form a more evidence filled, and proven foundation on my own beliefs, and maybe even to help others in their belief of Origins.

Ok. Mr Greene. Here are some pertinant statements regarding this topic in specific and in general. Some I agree with and some are still being mulled about in my mind. Enjoy.

"If I were granted omnipotence, and millions of years to experiment in, I should not think Man much to boast of as the final result of all my efforts" -Bertrand Russell

"Believing is easier than thinking. Hence so many more believers than thinkers." -Bruce Calvert

"The further the spiritual evolution of mankind advances, the more certain it seems to me that the path to genuine religiosity does not lie through the fear of life, the fear of death, and blind faith, but through striving after rational knowledge." -Albert Einstein

"Only the very ignorant are perfectly satisfied that they know. To the common man the great problems are easy. He has no trouble in accounting for the universe. He can tell you the origin and destiny of man and the why and wherefore of things. But honest men do not pretend to know; they are candid and sincere; they love the truth; they admit their ignorance, and they say, "We do not know."" -- Robert Green Ingersoll

"Give me the storm and stress of thought and action rather than the dead calm of ignorance and faith. Banish me from Eden when you will but first let me eat of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge." -- Robert Green Ingersoll

"Nothing is so firmly believed as that which we least know." -- Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533-1592) .

"Today, the theory of evolution is an accepted fact for everyone but a fundamentalist minority, whose objections are based not on reasoning but on doctrinaire adherence to religious principles." - James Dewey Watson

"It is the final proof of God's omnipotence that he need not exist in order to save us." - Peter De Vries (1910-1993)

"One does not have to appeal to God to set the initial conditions for the creation of the universe, but if one does He would have to act through the laws of physics." -Stephen Hawking, English scientist

"Science is the record of dead religions." -Oscar Wilde

"The government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." -John Adams, U.S. President

"Properly read, the Bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived." -Isaac Asimov

"The way to see by faith is to shut the eye of reason." -Benjamin Franklin

"The Church says that the earth is flat, but I know that it is round, for I have seen the shadow on the moon, and I have more faith in a shadow than in the Church." -Ferdinand Magellan, Portuguese & Spanish explorer

"The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one." -George Bernard Shaw

"I don't think we're here for anything, we're just products of evolution. You can say 'Gee, your life must be pretty bleak if you don't think there's a purpose', but I'm anticipating a good lunch." -James Watson

"Faith means not wanting to know what is true." -Freidrich Nietzsche

"There is so much in the bible against which every insinct of my being rebels, so much so that I regret the necessity which has compelled me to read it through from beginning to end. I do not think that the knowledge I have gained of its history and sources compensates me for the unpleasant details it has forced upon my attention." -Helen Keller

"We discover in the gospels a groundwork of vulgar ignorance, of things impossible, of superstition, fanaticism and fabrication." -Thomas Jefferson, U.S. President

"Fear believes--courage doubts. Fear falls up the earth and prays--- courage stands erect and thinks. Fear is barbarism---courage is civilization. Fear believes in witchcraft, devils and ghosts. Fear is religion, courage is science." -Robert G. Ingersoll
