Pope Leo will vote from the Vatican, by mail, in Illinois' midterm election

He may be the leader of the Catholic church, but Chicago-born Pope Leo XIV is still a registered voter in Illinois and requested a mail ballot for the midterm elections.

That’s according to the Will County clerk’s office.

“Robert Francis Prevost is on the list of individuals who requested a vote by mail ballot for the upcoming election,” Kim Fladhammer, Will County clerk’s office chief of staff, told the Sun-Times. The pope, who is registered to a New Lenox address, made the request on Oct. 3.

That mail ballot had to travel a long way — from Joliet to the Vatican City, where Pope Leo has led the Catholic church since white smoke appeared from the Sistine Chapel in May 2025.

Records show Prevost voted in the 2012, 2014 and 2016 Republican primaries, as well as in the 2012, 2014, 2018 and 2024 general elections. He also voted in Democratic primaries in 2008 and 2010. He did not vote in Illinois’ March primary. In Illinois, voters do not have to register by party and can choose parties for their primary ballot.

He’s a leftie, so we know how he’ll vote.
Sad. Back in my childhood, I actually respected the Pope. Now?

Sorry, Mr. Pope. Looks like you already voted. We can give you this provisional ballot that we will deep-six, however.

He is a Rat.

Member of a party that keeps our nation from righting itself and becoming faithful again to the precepts of the Bible.

The party that makes intentional abortion on demand a sacrament and has won many elections based on that fact.

The party of dissolving marriages, gay marriages, NAMBLA, legalized drugs, transitioning children, the party that seeks separation of Church and State, and would rather still have no Church at all and a totalitarian State.

The party that endorses Communism and its brother philosophies, and all the atheism, mass murder of innocents, theft, immorality, lying, codified and enshrined envy, likewise greed and tyranny.

The party that seeks to reduce people to drug- and vice-induced slaves.

This guy votes in their primaries.

He likes to choose the best of the best Rats.

Utterly sickening.

He's a great, modern, pope. The kind Rats would love.

He voted in Democrat primaries in 2008 and 2010. See the article above. Probably an Obama lover. Hope and Change.

I’m guessing a straight “D” ticket.

Looks like he most recently voted in Republican primaries.
So he is likely Republican.
I would say, he is likely moderate Republican.

The Founders should have prohibited duel citizenship. I get the advantages of a duel citizenship. But allegiance to one country only, please.

Leo is a citizen of the Vatican. So he should not be voting here.

Does becoming Pope make one a legal citizen of the Vatican?

It seems to me that being Pope is a job, and the Pope is like many other American citizens who live and work overseas...

I think if Pope Leo has ‘dual’ citizenship, it’s of the U.S. and Peru...

How can a foreign head of state (The Vatican is a sovereign nation) remain a US citizen with voting rights?

We have no law against it.

Being pope is more than just a job. He’s also the absolute monarch (dictator, actually) of a sovereign nation, the nation being Vatican City. With that office automatically comes Vatican City citizenship.

By the way, Vatican City citizenship is VERY difficult to get. The pope talks about open borders. Let everyone in! But there are no open borders in Vatican City.

🤔

According to AI, “every Catholic official serving in the Vatican holds Vatican citizenship, but it is granted by virtue of their office and is temporary, ending when they leave that role “

The only exception to that is the Pope.

This discussion raises another interestng question.

Pope Benedict XVI was the first Pope to resign in hundreds of years; and he was not Italian. What happened to his Vatican citizenship, if the citizenship of the pope is based on his position?

Normally, Popes die holding the position...

Sounds like a joke. But the joke’s on us.

Should he stick with the birth name for registration?

If the religious thing goes sour he wants the fall back job on MS Now.

On a related note, a while back I did a calculation. Based on its size, Vatican City can easily take in 2500 immigrants. And there is room in the Vatican gardens to house them all.

It is the height of hypocrisy for the pope to tell us to open our borders while he himself takes in zero immigrants.
