Vice President JD Vance said Thursday that the top US priority in the Iran war was keeping oil and gasoline prices low for Americans, with preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon ranking second.
The remarks contrasted with President Donald Trump's repeated framing of the fight: that entering the war had the sole objective of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, even if that meant short-term economic sacrifices for Americans.
Vance's comments also underscored the growing reality that the war now centers on control of the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has forced to the top of the negotiating agenda.
"I know that oil is down today and it's way down from the highs in the early days of the conflict," Vance said on Fox News. "That's goal number one – keep oil and gas cheap for Americans all over our country."
"And then obviously goal number two is ensure that Iran never gets a nuclear weapon," he added.
The vice president has been among the members of the administration most skeptical of the offensive launched against Iran in late February. His latest remarks, however, appear to confirm the more cautious approach now favored by the US president, which involves maintaining strong economic pressure on Iran while a military standoff in the Strait of Hormuz persists.
"Sometimes we're focused on the energy piece of it because we want Americans to be able to afford the price of oil and gas. Sometimes we're obviously focused on the military... on the nuclear program," Vance also said.
Vance added that Trump was "at the height of his authority with a lot of tools -- diplomatic, military and economic."***

If getting rid of the Islamic Republic regime is not the goal, the war continues.
Why would you tell enemies this?
That will be one of the easiest things to foil.
TRANSLATION: This was a stupid 'effing war, and the political repercussions are going to be disastrous.
Hardly
Actually it means Vance is not ready and may never be.
I know Vance’s going to run in 2028, but I’d rather it be Rubio.
In 2026, Vance is more MAGA than Trump. That's all you need to know about how sad and pathetic Trump's second term has become.
I have come to that point of view as well. I don’t entirely trust him but he is more rounded and far more electable. We must win 28
I’m hoping that Lee Zeldin runs.
I honestly think Rubio would get destroyed in any campaign format that didn’t involve teleprompters, staged interviews, and scripted answers. He might even make Kamala Harris look like a Mensa member.
My God this messaging is horrible. The press is going to have a field day with this. It looks horrible as if we went to war for economic reasons - I know its not the case but we all know how a quote like this looks. But even taking what Vance says in context, he is pivoting because the war is a mess and it still doesn’t make sense. You know what keeps oil prices high? A low-grade, on-going war with no end in sight with Iran pulling a surprise out of its hat every once in a while like damaging a tanker. Either go big or go home, JD.

There are two ways to kill a snake.
You try to kill it by cutting its head off. There is a chance it may bite you.
You put the snake in a box and cut off its food supply. It eventually dies.
What we are doing in Iran is putting the snake in a box and starving it to death, through embargoes and blockades.
This is prima facie proof the man is not worthy of the presidency.
Iranian nukes HAS to be the principal goal with everything else secondary.
> the top US priority in the Iran war was keeping oil and gasoline prices low <
What a weird thing to say. “A priority”, well okay.
But “the priority”?
To "pivot" would require that he initially thought starting this conflict with Iran was a good idea. By all available accounts, he wasn't. (And to the best of my recollection, he's been the one who's expressed the most reticence—publicly, at least—about this conflict, without outright condemning or butting heads with Trump himself.)
Either go big or go home, JD.
I think he's made it more than clear that we should've STAYED home.
Compare and contrast with nonsensical predictions like the below:
I have come to that point of view as well. I don’t entirely trust him but he is more rounded and far more electable. We must win 28
Oderint dum metuant
Your hate for Trump will consume you.
