Europeans are divided over whether the EU should move closer to the United States or to China, according to new polling shared exclusively with POLITICO that highlights how Donald Trump’s second presidency has upended long-standing geopolitical loyalties.
In a survey conducted in June by pollster Public First across 24 EU countries, respondents in eight countries leaned toward stronger relations with China, nine favored the U.S. and seven were effectively split between the two.
In 14 countries, the single most common response was “I don’t know” — with more people giving that answer than backing either Washington or Beijing.
The responses underscore the difficult situation facing the bloc, as political and trade tensions strain relations with the two global superpowers — its two largest trading partners.
Brussels is implementing a one-sided trade deal with the Trump administration, while it faces progressive deindustrialization driven by a surge of Chinese exports including electric vehicles.
“Europeans see distance from America as achievable and, in some countries, already the majority preference. They see reliance on China as more of a necessity, and efforts to mitigate it as wishful thinking,” said Seb Wride, head of opinion research at Public First.

China luv EU long time.
Pick China. We can’t afford you anymore.
Well, I remember that in Italy right before the pandemic got really bad, there was a “hug a Chinese person” campaign. And we know how in Italy, the pandemic was especially bad.
Europe is in big trouble. This needs to be pointed out to the citizenry of Europe incessantly. Freedom is at stake.
Why would socialists cozying up to socialists be surprising?
EU has always wanted a new slant on dealing with global issues.
I saw that!
“Europeans are divided over whether the EU should move closer to the United States or to China.”
What a bunch of dummies. It doesn’t matter which country they choose.
They’re all going to end up closer to Mecca.
It’s getting to where they don’t have a lot of freedom left anway.
I will say though, China doesn’t care about appeasing Muslims, like the Euros do.
When Democrats take power in the US again, the Europeans will follow China regardless.
You can no longer be an European in an EU country.
> I will say though, China doesn’t care about appeasing Muslims, like the Euros do. <
Good point. There have been reports of the ChiComs opening up covert police stations in other countries. Maybe the Euro-weenies should encourage that, and let the Chinese cops handle Muslim crimes.
🤔
Agreed 100%! Pick China
1. Its rather telling isn't it? One country was founded by Europeans, traces its origin to the European Enlightenment, speaks a European language, uses systems that all came from Europe, is populated overwhelmingly by ethnic Europeans, stepped in decisively in two World Wars (both started by Europeans and largely took place in Europe). Then financed the continent's reconstruction while at the same time protecting it from the expansionist Soviet Union and gave European countries very one sided trade deals which it kept in place for over 70 years after WWII ended and which is the EU's largest trading partner.
On the other side you have a completely different country populated by a distinctly different ethnic group with a form of government most Europeans would be horrified by.....and almost as many prefer this one. That pretty much tells you all you need to know.
Does somebody want to explain China's demographics to them? The chances of China overtaking America are practically nil.
The Chinese especially don't care for America's most revered and worshiped race either. Not even as tourists.
