Tariffs imposed on U.S. good exported to Europe

Posted on 02/22/2026 2:08:02 PM PST by ma_che62

Does anyone know where I can find a chart or article that shows what the tariffs imposed by EU countries on U.S. goods were...preferably by year (i.e., pre Trump)?

This whole discussion is a disaster unless you know what Trump was dealing with BEFORE he took office. The Europeans wine about Trump's tariffs but you NEVER read about what they imposed when our goods were exported to their countries.

I'm interested in the tariffs they imposed on American food products, alcohol products (wine, liquor etc.), automobiles, electronics, etc., etc.

Thank you!

This is not comprehensive nor historical, but it might give you some related info:

Wow! Thank you!

It certainly is not a simple as the Administration would have us believe...at least it seems that way.

The EU countries were imposing retaliatory tariffs on our tariffs and vice versa...it was not a simple case that we had zero tariffs on EU imports to the U.S. and they were loading up tariffs on U.S. exports to Europe.

Yes it’s nightmarishly complex.

Think about it - “free trade” would require no agreement, it’d just happen without government interference.

Yet even Bill Clinton’s NAFTA was how many pages? That’s a lot of rules for something that’s purportedly free.

And we have crap like that with every country for just about every product and service imaginable.

Just about everything the USA exports other countries is tariff’d. I think Singapore is the only country that doesn’t slap a tariff on “made in the USA”

Oh BS. Have you been to the EU? Ever seen an American car?

This is not what you are looking for and it is all anecdotal, but I think it is representative:

I was looking for a mechanical switch-timer that could handle turning off my water heater.

I found a “Tork” unit on-line that claimed to meet my needs. All of the pictures showed “Made in USA” proudly displayed on the unit.

The only units I could find, locally, proudly displayed “Made in Mexico.” I bought them.

Eventually, only box-stores carried units that less-than-proudly displayed (only on the boxing), “Made in China”.

Of course, the quality deteriorated towards the Chinese units, but the tariff-free market increased!

I leave you to figure it out.

In 2010 ( pre Trump ), the U.S. trade deficit with the European Union increased by 29 percent to $97.6 billion, as total merchandise trade between the two partners rose by 11 percent. This increase was driven by a modest rise in the growth rate of the European GDP, leading to higher U.S. exports to the EU.

If I were you, I’d stop being afraid to trust Trump on this.

Actually, it’s not complex. Careful, you’re falling for the oldest trick in the book.

The liars convince you of their lies with the claim “but it’s more complicated than that.”

Like I said, oldest trick in the book.
