Socialists Are the New Luddites (And They May Have a Point)
Hot Air ^ | 17 Dec 2025 | John Sexton

Sen. Bernie Sanders released a video yesterday calling for a moratorium on the construction of new data centers. His pitch is that AI is being created and promoted by multi-billionaires, who are always the villains in his take on the world. He asks viewers this question: "Do you believe that these guys, these multi-billionaires are staying up nights worrying about what AI and robotics will do to the working families of our country and the world?" Sanders answers his own question, saying, "I think these very rich men want even more wealth and more power and for a whole bunch of reasons that is very dangerous.".....

Regular readers know I'm not a fan of Bernie's politics. In fact, I detest socialism with a passion and I generally shrug off complaints about the wealthy as the politics of envy.

In this case, I still don't agree with Sanders but I think he does have a legitimate point. After all, the people he's quoting in that video, Elon Musk and Bill Gates, aren't know-nothing outsiders. It's literally the people who know this field who are warning that it has the potential to replace a lot of workers. That's not a worst case scenario in their view, it's the desired outcome of AI reaching a point referred to as artificial general intelligence.

Elon Musk has talked about this many, many times. His view is that this will create a huge disruption and that, eventually work will become optional, replaced by some version of universal basic income....

The green-tards desperately don’t want energy sector expansion.

But you know the old joke, “What did people use for light before socialists invented the candle? Electricity.”

Elon Musk: "I think long term, money disappears as a concept.

In a future, where anyone can have anything, you no longer need money as a database for labor allocation."

Bernie has a point - yes, but so did the people who said computers would take jobs away. They did - and jobs were also added by computers. Lots of ‘em.

Let’s say a worst case scenario with AI is that rather than working 5 days a week 8 hours a day - we work 3 days a week 6 hours a day. Now would that really be so horrible?

There is no stopping it. The best we can hope for is good guys controlling it. Sanders is an evil little fool who will make things infinity worse if we listen to him.

I think my output was optimized at 6 hr. x 6 days.

[Bad for commuting though.]

So, is Bernie Sanders and others like him going to manage AI? Don’t like that either...

In George Orwell’s first novel - Down and Out in Paris and London he speaks of working 12 hour days six days a week. His ‘solution’ was socialism (1933) when the easier answer was to make employers pay time and half for overtime.

We can figure AI out ...

AI only pays if you lay off millions.

That’s what the trillions in investments is chasing.

MASSIVE reductions in personnel costs and enormous increases in “productivity”.

That does not answer why you don’t believe Sanders had a legitimate point.

Counter-question:
Do you believe that welfare queens, drug addicts, illegal aliens, trannies, and mind-addled "homeless people" are staying up nights, worrying about what their mischief is doing to the working families of America?

For AI to expand as projected it will require 50% MORE ELECTRICITY GENERATING CAPACITY IN THE USA!

Failing that, power costs will skyrocket. Get ready to pay 3 times more for power because of AI.

Hopefully, the Silicon Valley billionaires will keep moving away from the Democrat Party when they realize how the Dems are increasingly hostile to their business interests. The newly elected Democrat Governor of Virginia has already announced plans to make all the Data Centers in northern Virginia pay more for electricity costs.

The Gorilla in the room is today is a very large portion of jobs in America are held by Democrats that can easily be replaced by AI. What are we to do do with all these stupid voters?
Voters who are now un-employed and un-employable by reason of their rejection of the concept of being useful to someone that wants to hire you for your skills, not your race, sexual, identities, or your creed. They want skills they can use to make money, to make things people want.
Not just get votes for an idiot movement “project of the day’.
I’m a journeyman shipwright, Electronics engineer, Software engineer, Electronics technician, and all the side skills that go with all of that. I retired at age 55.
Even at age 70 I can get a job today.
Life long learning, and a sense of earned self worth.
is the key to sucess.
