Former Trump White House official Marc Short told Politico’s Dasha Burns that the Democratic Party will likely dominate the 2026 midterms.
In an appearance on CSPAN’s Ceasefire alongside Democratic strategist Adrienne Elrod, Short said that the Republican Party is already set to endure heavy losses in the upcoming elections.
“I think it’s going to be a really steep climb, Dasha,” said Short, in relation to GOP midterm efforts. “The reality is that Americans like divided government. They don’t want one party in control. Each time there’s been one party in control, there’s been a backlash.”
The once chief of staff to former Vice President Mike Pence noted that in previous midterms, the incumbent party is much more vulnerable to losing Congressional seats.
“And so, just like in the 2018 midterms when Republicans had control of everything, Democrats had a big year. In 2022, when Democrats are in control of everything, Republicans had a big year,” he said. “So, I think you’re going to see likely a Democrat year in the midterms.”
Short said that due to recent gerrymandering efforts that have decreased the number of contested districts, a Democratic sweep may be smaller than in past years, if still significant.
“The reality is that so many of our house districts are drawn today to gerrymander for each side that there’s fewer really districts that are really competitive,” he said.
“And potentially more that are going to be gerrymandered, right?” asked Burns.

I was right then, and now it’s too late, Trump having thrown in his lot with the failed and collapsing GOP.
Trump wasn’t elected by Republicans. Sure, a lot of registered Republicans voted for him, but so did a lot of Democrats and non-affiliated Americans. Electing him in 2016 was not a “Republican victory”, it was a revolutionary act by the People.
The situation in the nation today is much worse than it was in 2016. The country is ripe for revolution.
Trump has shown flashes of being the leader of what would amount to a revolutionary change, but he, like me, is an older boomer and it’s hard to develop radical new ideas at our age.
The GOP, by which I mean the elected officials and party leaders not in office is a boat anchor dragging Trump down.
People here call them “RINOs”. NO!!! They are perfect representatives of a dying political movement which has hurt the nation, and which would rather die than back Trump’s play. The ones you call “RINOs”? THEY ARE THE REAL REPUBLICANS.
When the situation calls for revolution, and one party takes a revolutionary stance while the other does not, history tells us what will happen.

I was so happy to see Bush II win the election. I was eagerly waiting for push back, but it never happened. Instead he was a spender, such as Medicare D, and got two of the largest laundries in operation in our whole history (Afghanistan & Iraq).

Im hearing in alternative media that Trump is going to issue a national emergency order and federalize the election system so we vote with paper ballots, same day voting and no mail ins except the military. Hopefully this is true because if we have a free and fair election the Republicans will win.
And he deserted us totally when he went with McCain and Kennedy for the amnesty bill.
The election is a year away and it’s impossible to imagine what could transpire in that year.
Rules for elections of Representatives (and Senators since 1916) can be made by Congress.
Appointment of Presidential Electors and how it is done are a sovereign power of State Legislatures, neither Congress nor the President have any power over that.
Well, yes we all know that. Under a national emergency order congress and the judiciary are suspended. That’s when the President takes charge. I don’t know if that is going to happen but there are a good number of people in alternative media who think it is coming very soon. Time will tell.
