Late-night TV legend Jay Leno called the assassination of conservative rockstar Charlie Kirk “the death of free speech. The Tonight Show icon also said Kirk’s cold-blooded murder “was not a random shooting.”
“I mean, it’s the death of free speech, to think that you are so illiterate and so stupid you can’t answer verbally, and you have to shoot somebody with a gun to win the argument,” Jay Leno said last week on The Tim Conway Jr. Show on KFI 640 in Los Angeles.
Leno said the days of “lively” debates between conservative intellectuals like William F. Buckley and liberal cultural icons like James Baldwin “are gone.”
“But this is a political assassination of a man I didn’t necessarily agree with, but I certainly enjoyed listening to because, ‘Oh, I didn’t know that.’ I don’t have to agree on everything,” Leno said. “We’re in a point in this country where if you don’t agree with everybody and everything, you take out a gun and you shoot them, and especially on a college campus

You should have agreed with him, Jay.
“We’re in a point in this country where if you don’t agree with everybody and everything, you take out a gun and you shoot them, and especially on a college campus”
Who is “We”, Jay?
Translation: I don't like Charlie Kirk and need everyone to know it. Now I am compelled to say something civil that I don't really think.
He’s using “we” collectively, as in the USA. And he’s right — obviously, “we’re” at that point. He’s not making the “both sides” argument, though that’s what many will hear.
Leno’s always been careful not taking a side, though I suspect he leans more Right than Left, or it’s possible he’s a true centrist.
“ “we” collectively”
Is the both sides argument
Don’t waste any more of my time
People criticizing Jay need to remember that he paid the price for his near daily criticisms of Obama. His hugely popular and profitable show was taken off the air— for what ??
Nail. Head.
Jay, it a8nt the death of free speech, but it is a serious assault,on free speech. But the more they try to silence the righteous, the louder the righteous will get! That is just a fact of oppr3ssion and tyranny, the righteous often strengthen their faith and reso,ve to fight evil during times of persecution
The position of those on the left is:
Agree with everything we say or we will end your life.
If that is not a terrorist threat, nothing is.
They need a collective time-out, say 5 to 10 years.
Kudos and props to Jay Leno.
This is hands down the best commentary on the Kirk assassination that I have seen.
It reminds me of the meme or quote that it is us that they want to attack, Trump just stands in the way.
Charlie Kirk, for all the tragedy that it is for him, his family, and his life and legacy, his assassination is symbolic not just of the hate and evil that is out there, but how they want us all to be silenced and even destroyed.
“.....this is a political assassination of a man I didn’t necessarily agree with......”
“ I certainly enjoyed listening to him; I don’t have to agree on everything,” Leno said.
He’s trying to keep his Hollywood bona fides intact.
“We’re in a point in this country where if you don’t agree with everybody and everything, you take out a gun and you shoot them, “
Or the media call them a nazi, accuse them of crimes, and accuse them of being pedos so that some unhinged nut shoots them for us.
Leno was never one who was nasty or who only aimed his jokes at one side of the aisle. I think he’s completely sincere when he says he values the exchange of ideas. He’s a liberal - not a Leftist....same as Johnny Carson before him. We’d be in much better shape as a country if it were still liberals dominating the other side rather than leftists.
It’s only dead if you shut up
.I ain’t shuttin’ up.
I think the most powerful statements come from people exactly like Leno, and even Bernie Sanders in this case. People who openly disagreed with Charlie but are horrified by and strongly opposed efforts to silence them, including murder.
Indeed - anally examining rhetorical patterns of Jay Leno isn’t particularly enlightening.
Seeing Jimmy Kimmel turning late night entertainment into political indoctrination and cultish ‘programming’ is far more apt for demonstrating the cultural rot.
And Colbert, and SNL. These morphed from entertainment and comedy to political cultism as you said.
It’s also wild that any disagreement with the left is immediately labeled as “hate”. It’s gone so far in England that publicly disagreeing with government immigration policies will send you to jail for “hate speech.”
He’s trying to keep his Hollywood bona fides intact.
