Save NASA! Science budget cuts don't help anyone!

If you like all the Science NASA has done since 1961, then wave it all goodby. NASA budget cut to the lowest since 1961 - before there was a manned space program. No more Rovers, probes, [ even 99942 Apophis probes cut, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis ]. There are no private entities that can or will pick up the slack. Cuts to Hubble and to Webb will leave them orbiting junk.

Coupled with the possible collapse of SpaceX from 47's vengeance feud with Musk, the US will no longer have a space program - civilian or military.

These twin disasters in the making will catapult China into the world leader in space. Youth interested in space exploration will flock to China. Others will go to the UK, Europe, India & Japan.

Cool. Then we can all relax. No space budget is then needed.

Why does the head of OMB hate NASA? And why should he have so much say-so in their budget? Isn’t OMB more advisory than regulatory?

I have no idea what the guy’s motivation is, but he’s been trying to shut NASA down for a long time. He advised The House [ Senate? ] that all of NASA’s science programs be cut, and what’s left go to the Space Force in a massive duplication of projects. Not to mention the billions of wasted money on existing projects like Hubble, Webb and the Martin Rovers, but also on projects that were in the works will now have to be scraped, like the 99942 Apophis asteroid probe to learn when it will hit the Earth.

Sounds like NASA needs to prioritize,

Too late, NASA science is shutting down, lay offs are underway.

You continue to see as equivalent NASA and a viable US space program. I see NASA as a government agency is an impediment to that, not a critical enabler.

The "people that make NASA science work" all retired by 1980. "Everything that went before" was lost before most of the current NASA employees were born. The "knowledge base created in the last 65 years" is how to squash innovation through bureaucratic poison, the most potent of which is a full-on CYA mentality regardless of how poorly things are run.

I know you won't agree, but I won't agree to your equating of NASA and a viable space program. They are not the same.

“Too late, NASA science is shutting down, lay offs are underway.”

Layoffs are prioritizing.

Sounds like a lot, but it is tiny in comparison with the needs to safely preform those missions.

” I’d argue for an updated and state-of-the-art replacement built with an emphasis on safety,”

Then you will love the brand new shinny Chinese space station.

“And how much of our lunch are our enemies going to eat because they aren’t as penny wise pound foolish?”

Most of it - they will invariably leave some crumbs for the US to pick up.

Cut it all. I’m no longer down with the mission.

It could be cut in half and still do the science, but it doesn’t want to. It is a DEI org only.

You know that because you read it on the internet?

They promised me that by the time I retired I would be enjoying vacations on luxury resorts on the moon and Mars and maybe some other planets as well.

No NASA did not - it was the media that made those projections.

Youngster, the US was going to be on Mars by 1968 and Saturn by 1970, while interstellar vehicles crews with thousands would be making for the nearest stars. Killed by politics in 1964. [ Reasons Project Orion killed: Government inter-agency infighting, NASA Apollo conflict, perceived treaty obligations, lack of political leadership. “...the first time in modern history that a major expansion of human technology has been suppressed for political reasons.” - Freeman Dyson. ] Like the Space Shuttle was going to be more than a LEO vehicle, but again killed by politics.

I have called NASA the “dog ate my homework” agency.

They generate excuses by the truckload.

They will blame anyone and everyone—and refuse to take responsibility for anything.

That is one reason why slashing their budget is a good thing.

Right you are - which with that internet induced knowledge is why the Chinese will be the first on the Moon and Mars, also why US grand-kids will be speaking Chinese as their first language. I never equated NASA and a viable space program.

A viable manned space program is not space science - two different areas.

The BBBis not “slashing their budget” - it destroys the entire agency.

The Chinese started sixty years behind us.

Even with that head start NASA couldn’t get its act together.

This is sickening and pathetic.
