Ian takes a 1970 Chevrolet Caprice for a test drive on narrow UK roads.
Harkens to “The Great Red Shark” ala “Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas”
True comfort. Long wheelbase and low center of gravity.
I had to sell my ‘94 Roadmaster with the 350 due to emissions issues, but it was well north of 300,000 miles, and other than James Bond/Batmobile exhaust, the engine was fine. The Caprice was sold with 220,000 miles and a second bad tranny, right before cross-country move.
My father bought a ‘69 Chevrolet Bel Air that was a TANK. We all learned to drive in that car - the back seat could fit 5 kids side by side!!!!!! A woman hydroplaned and slammed into me in the rain and while her car was TOTALED., the police laughed and made a big deal out of blowing off the thick chrome Bel Air bumper and showing there wasn’t even a scratch!
Sigh. I miss driving older cars. I would buy an extra one and fix it up, but have no place to store it.
I could say the same about the great ride of the 74 Pontiac Grand Ville my dad bought several years ago from an estate sale.
He got tired of the car and sold it after a couple of years.
Great sounding 455.

Ditto that. And ABS & traction control are big.
1st car = ‘72 Buick Electra, 455 4-barrel.
1st car- 1966 Chrysler New Yorker 4-door V8 440. I believe a family of four could live in the backseat.
1st car 1967 Olds 98 with 455 4-barrel. Yuge.
Cadillac Seville, you naughty boy.
“My Dad bought a 77 Caprice Classic brand new.”
My dad bought one new then too. POS.
We also had a 72 Caprice two-door with the 400 ci.
Did the cross country road trip vacation thing in a 1972 Chevrolet Caprice 4 door with my dad, 6 kids and a dog round trip from Albany Georgia to Clovis New Mexico via Hampton Virginia in 1974. What a trip! What an experience! With most of the interstates still under construction we spent a lot of time on two lane US highways. Saw a lot of country. Trip included a two day layover in Oklahoma City due to 4 kids coming down with a slight case of food poisoning.
“I’d put either of those machines up against anything on the road today for comfort and power, and ease of maintenance.”
LOL!
My wife’s 2014 SUV outrun them and is more comfortable and safer.
ZERO maintenance except for tires and oil changes.
Same for my 750 hp Roush. Better mileage, too!
“Those are the cars that hold up for 40 years.”
And only see them on the road twice a year ...
Still driving a 94 Caprice wagon with 300k on the clock. The 350 is still going strong but the tranny is on its last legs. It replaced an 84 Caprice with a 305 that was still going after almost 300k but the tranny in it crapped out. Wish now I’d rebuilt the tranny and motor on the 84. I liked that car but the wife didn’t because of cosmetic stuff. Now that I’ve lost her I might look for another of the box Caprices and restore it.
Sounded like an atomic vacuum cleaner (if such a thing existed) when you punched it.

This guy’s daily drive is a 1980 Citroen 2CV. This was a big car for him.
But, yeah, a Newport, or a Coupe DeVille, Lincoln Mark IV. Those were huge
