Locals on another thread last night were saying that the sound echoes weirdly in that canyon making it hard to determine where sound originated.

It could also make multiple shots from a single firearm sound like multiple weapons.

There were similar thoughts about the Mandalay Bay shooting back in 2017, but people weren’t taking into account sound bouncing off of buildings. Sound and accoustics are weird as hell, I live in a mobile home community (a suburb with trailers) and sound is just different in there. Sometimes it’s hard to peg location and distance of something making noise.
