X: Karmelo Anthony Requesting Free Lawyer as "Indigent"
X ^

Posted on 06/29/2025 2:29:52 PM PDT by TigerClaws

BREAKING: Karmelo Anthony submitted an Indigent Packet to the Collin County Court, requesting court-appointed legal representation as an indigent (financially destitute) defendant.

However, just 24 hours ago, the Anthony family updated their GiveSendGo campaign to reflect a need to raise an additional $1.4 million for “a legal team.”

Karmelo Anthony’s mother, Kala Hayes, who manages the GiveSendGo, stated on April 17th (two months ago) that they had just gained access to the funds. At that time, they had already raised $350,000. The fundraiser has now reached $538,000.

According to a source, their current known attorney, Mike Howard, is more than likely charging a retainer fee of $10,000–$30,000 and charges $400–$500 per hour.

Where did the money go? Why do they need $1.4 million? Will they be granted indigence and an appointed attorney with a GiveSendGo of this magnitude? Is this considered fraud?

Collin County doesn’t have a Public Defender’s office as is found in some other large counties. It looks like local attorneys can sign up for court appointments. https://www.collincountytx.gov/Courts/Indigent-Defense

$1500 if they appointed attorney pleads them guilty; $1000 plus $500 per half day to try the case. Some adjustments possible with justification.

Capital cases(not death penalty) pay hourly at a rate of $100/hour.

I don't know how they do it in Texas, but in NY, a defendant can ask for a court appointed lawyer, then an outside lawyer represents them, and they bill the state for the money. That's how LIRR shooter Colin Ferguson got the commies, Kunstler and Kuby, and all the taxpayers got the bill.

And as if that wasn't bad enough, that shooting led to Caroline McCarthy for 18 years.

It’s possible the family knows he’s guilty as sin and figures why waste the money when there’s mansions to be bought.

Money raised like this should be held in constructive trust. Why should he and his family profit from a capital crime?
Laws designed to prevent criminals from profiting from their crimes, often called “Son of Sam” laws, exist in many US states and at the federal level. These laws aim to ensure that criminals do not financially benefit from the notoriety gained from selling the rights to their stories, especially in books, movies, or other media. Instead, the money is often directed to victims of the crime or to victim compensation funds.

Did anyone expect anything different.

This absolutely goes to show you reparations would never work. Instead of using the money to lift themselves up, they will blow it and then beg for more.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a mortgage on the house and the cars were leased.

A friend’s dad died when we were in high school and his mother didn’t use the money to pay off their house or buy a car, only leased a Mercedes.

The money went away quickly.

As I posted & predicted on a thread on 4/17:

“All that merch better sell quickly to support their spending spree. On another thread, it was posited the family was leasing rather than buying.

Taking that approach to $447K already donated, start subtracting on your calculator: $25K off the top for the bail bondsman; $3.5K per month on the leased house; $2.5K per month on the Escalade plus the upfront charges; miscellaneous costs like car insurance @ $1K/month minimum; Amazon delivery of the latest video game console plus a big screen; max service cable package @ $250/month.

They are well on the way to busted inside of 2 years and this doesn’t even count the cost of a legal defense. That’s some classic dumbass on display.”

His family knows he’s going down and they don’t want to waste the go fund me money on his defense when it could be better spent on Escalades, bling and hoes.

2025 gift tax exclusion limit is $19,000 per spouse. A married couple can write separate checks for $19,000 each to make their grand total limit $38,000.

The family just might want him out of the house so they don't have to sleep with one eye open for fear he'll feel dissed...

Collin County’s demographic composition is not inherently disadvantageous to the defendant, and the high-profile nature of the case ensures substantial media coverage.

This creates a unique professional opportunity for a capable defense attorney: the potential to secure either a hung jury or an acquittal while gaining visibility in the legal community.

Success in such a case could significantly enhance the attorney’s reputation and attract future clients able to pay substantial legal fees.

Oh yes. President Trump sure did pardon Kwame. I love Trump but was not happy about that.

There is a term for that but one is frowned upon for using it.

Kilpatrick was not pardoned but his sentence was commuted after seven years. He had support among Trump’s black allies and the black Detroit political community. As for the merits of the commutation, on balance, Kilpatrick’s federal sentence of 28 years for corruption seems excessive.

Wow. $541,000 and cars, houses and bling is more important that keeping their brat out of prison.

Alternative explanation: They know he's going down no matter what, so why not?

Much ado about nothing. He doesn’t need a public defender, or Clarence Darrow. All this insect requires is a single Black juror, and he walks. This is a metaphysical certainty. Even in Texas, he will walk. It is up to the victim’s family to exact justice when that occurs. Our system is broken and corrupt.
