Exactly. The “plausible” story they could say was we didn’t have to approve, at a high level, these prepared form letters. However, knowing what I know about them and how they have looked the other way in terms of the illegal immigrant issue, really does not make that seem plausible.

Following up - Daily Mail picked up the story.
One of the comments says that Los Angeles has a large community of Persians who fled the oppressive regime. So they managed to insult a variety of races, creeds, and religions with the post.
It’s not a real ‘apology’ until someone is fired.
Did the “Sheriff Department” issue the statement or was it a now former sheriff department media employee who made the post without authority? It will be interesting to see how this shakes out.
