Trump criticizes Russia being booted from G7
The Hill ^ | June 16, 2024

President Trump began the Group of Seven (G7) summit Monday in Canada by arguing it was a mistake to kick Russia out of the organization more a decade ago.

“The G7 used to be the G8. Barack Obama and a person named [former Canadian Prime Minister Justin] Trudeau didn’t want to have Russia in, and I would say that was a mistake, because I think you wouldn’t have a war right now if you had Russia in,” Trump said during his first meeting of the summit with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Trump has made similar comments in the past. Russia was booted from the group in 2014 for illegally annexing Crimea from Ukraine.

Russia in 2022 launched an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. Trump and his administration have pushed for an end to the war, and while Russian and Ukrainian officials have met for direct talks, there has been little progress toward a ceasefire.

Trump spoke Saturday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, one of several talks the two leaders have held since Trump began his second term. Trump is expected to have a meeting while in Canada with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the G7. Trump has met Zelensky in person twice, once at the White House during a volatile bilateral meeting and another time at the Vatican.

Trump on Monday also signaled an openness to inviting China to be part of the G7 moving forward.

“I wouldn’t mind that,” Trump said of China’s inclusion. “If someone wants to suggest China.”

The G7 was NEVER a military, nuclear, or peacemaking organization.

If Russia, an economic junior varsity player, wants to discuss those issues, it can do so at the UN or in bilateral talks.

At the same time Trump makes these comments the US cancels scheduled talks with Russia on normalizing relations.

This administration’s foreign policy is at best, dysfunctional.

Cherry-picking industries does NOT = GDP.

You're returning to your childish red-herring argument. I'm no longer talking to you as you have proven you want to be deliberately obtuse, and are dealing in propaganda (why, for example, do you bring Tucker Carlson into this?)

So I speak to anyone following this ridiculous conversation instead.

Do you even know how GDP is calculated?

It includes ALL value-added economic activity, including services and financial trading. Because of this, NY City Metro Area, because it trades financial instruments, and makes profits from this, it is claimed, a larger GDP than Russia, or Canada, or most of Western Europe

So use whatever "GDP statistics" you want

In terms of the stuff of REAL economic power - Russia is a top 10 producer in it all.

Your argument to exclude them from multilateral institutions because of your manufactured statistics is silly, and dangerous, and shows who owns you.

Your plumbing argument is also ridiculous - and completely meaningless out of context. Russia is the largest land mass country in the world. I live in a rural county where >25% of people use well-water and propane tanks - disconnected from the grid.

I guess that makes my whole state and the USA more "backward" than Russia.

I don’t know much about this but I see it’s got the usual European trolls on it, as to be expected. It is, after all, a weekday afternoon.

But when we’ve got two competing monetary systems, doesn’t it make sense to try to bridge the gap and encourage trade with BRICS countries? Especially since they are gold-backed and ours is fiat currency?

Also, the most important products for infrastructure, growth, national security, and health are more important to consider than products like guava and avocadoes - a point that seems to go right over the heads of the trolls. We have strategic interest in some products over and above others.

Russia is still a member of G-20.

Of course Russia should never have been booted.

Still one of the most strategic countries in the world.

Maybe check out a map, population, and those nukes and missiles.

The G7 was created by Nixon and other leaders explicitly as a globalist enterprise.

If globalism is so awful, why does Russia want in??

India is not part of the G7, and it’s the 3rd largest economy in the world…soon to be 3rd largest.

“Russia in 2022 launched an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine”

The big lie. Russia was most definitely provoked by the ukes getting cozy with NATO

LOL, Ukraine was neutral in 2014, and had given up all nuclear weapons, with most of its citizens against joining NATO. What did Putin do?

He seized Crimea and annexed it, then started a separatist war in Ukraine.

Ukraine "provokes" Russia:

“Getting cozy” is not a capital offense.

Putin was pissed about Ukraine aligning itself with the EU. It was nowhere near being accepted into NATO, and if and when it were, Putin could then have issued an ultimatum.

Trump had an excellent point. I know you may not agree. Perhaps India and Brazil ought to be brought in, too. But Russia has/had great potential.

And in Putin’s interview with Tucker Carlson, you can tell Vladmir was still miffed about his country being shunted out of the gathering.

There was promise for that country in the wake of the collapse of the Iron Curtain. And the west seems to have let that promise die. Not good.

I’m unsure of the west being to blame. Read “Red Notice” by Bill Browder. He was an investment banker who got in on the ground floor of post-Soviet capitalism in Poland first and the in Russia. (By happy coincidence, his grandfather had been Secretary of the Communist Party of the USA decades earlier!)

It didn’t take long for communism to transition through capitalism to outright kleptocracy. And Putin had a hand in that last stage.

Regarding China its more then a trade war but not yet a shooting war. For example, they rob us blind of IP, buy up property in shall we say odd locations, they have counter-Intel centers in cities and at major universities to identify and put pressure on dissidents like that traditional Chinese dance troupe, they bribe politicians, honey trap them, dangle money in front of corporations to influence their behavior. They recently passed a law requiring a China visa holders to cooperate with MSS - Chinese intelligence.

Trump needs to suspend the visas of all PRC visa holders for at least one year! Not continue to play kissy face with them!
