If you wanted to drill down to the biggest dividing factor here, it’s the portion of the coalition made up of college-educated women – a cohort that now dominates the politics of the Democratic coalition. In their circles, they say differences of political opinion have led to broken friendships with friends and neighbors at a more than 40-point rate – 67 percent to 24 percent.
One factor here could be an underlying belief that your friends and neighbors are just flat-out racists over their political opinions. Of Kamala Harris voters, Cygnal’s poll found that 62 percent say race relations have gotten worse in the past five years (since the summer of George Floyd), while 55 percent of Trump voters say race relations have improved or stayed the same. And again, the same cohort shows up to double-down on that belief: fully 75 percent of white female Democrats with a college-degree say race relations have gotten worse since 2020 – compared to just 41 percent of black men.
It’s the allyship that matters most, you see – not friendship.
Just as a reminder of how ephemeral most tribal political battles are, the late Charles Krauthammer wrote:

Of course they do. Women are generally more impressionable and women who spend a longer time in the education system have been indoctrinated more thoroughly. I see it in my own family.
College educated...why pay the high price when a lobotomy is cheaper and has better results.

And the term “college educated” has become an oxymoron over the last about 25 years.
College indoctrinated. College graduated. Not much education happening any more.

I ended several friendships with hardcore liberals and leftists during the Obama years.
Friends are supposed to have common bonds. We once had common bonds. We eventually came to have few to none. At that point, there was no basis for friendship. It was just acquaintance based off historical habit and inertia.
I always thought the observation conservatives had about liberals was way off. For me, abortion was the issue that placed liberals in the evil camp.
I’m male. I have ended a very long friendship over politics. That friend became bat-shit crazy with TDS, exceptionally unpleasant in his dealings with me. Anyone who verbally abuses me over my beliefs or political affiliation just isn’t friend material. Those with TDS changed, became bonkers, different people than originally.
College educated. There was a time when that was a good thing.
More like college indoctrinated.
Education is supposed to help you develop a good BS Meter, that clearly is not happening today.
I’ve seen it myself. Most likely — college educated, self-hating WHITE women.
