From March 26th to March 31st, over 100 crime writers are participating in an auction to support the Transgender Law Center
These are dire times. Human rights, and especially the rights of trans folks, are under attack. And thankfully, some of the crime fiction community has come together to fight back. For the next week, leading up to the March 31st Day of Trans Visibility, over 100 crime writers are participating in an auction benefitting the Transgender Law Center, including such folks as Roxane Gay, David Baldacci, Gillian Flynn, Louise Penny, and many more.
According to the fundraiser’s press release, “this initiative…was started by a group of crime fiction writers who were troubled by the increasing restrictions on trans identities and the attempts to erase them. Originally unsure of how much support this effort would receive, they were moved by the enthusiasm of so many prominent writers.”
Trans author, attorney, and advocate Robyn Gigl adds: “I honestly wish this initiative wasn’t necessary, but unfortunately, it is. The trans community is a relatively small segment of the population and that why it’s so vitally important for our allies to stand with us and support us. It’s an honor to be part of this effort.”
Those who would like to donate directly instead of bidding on auction items can do so easily from the auction home page, and as of this writing, the fundraising effort has already brought in over half of the organizers’ set goal. Thanks to the crime writers (and readers) who’ve made this possible, and here’s hoping we’ll see the mystery community engaged in plenty more activism to come.
Molly Odintz is the managing editor for CrimeReads and the editor of Austin Noir, now available from Akashic Books. She grew up in Austin and worked as a bookseller before becoming a Very Professional Internet Person. She lives in central Texas with her cat, Fritz Lang.
Please don’t let Michael Connolly be on the list.
What sane man wants to read book after book that tells he that *he* is what’s wrong with the world?
Really? He was the editor of one of those “best of” anthologies, so I thought he’d be part of the circle.
But who are the readers? Men don’t buy a lot of books. I’m not sure how many conservatives buy.
I clicked on some of the links provided to see if a list is provided as to those authors who support this. No such luck. Of the extreme few authors listed, only Balducci is one I know. Read one of his years ago and was not impressed.
“March 31st Day of Trans Visibility”. Seems like there’s a new holiday all the time.
🔝🔝🔝 😀😃😂🤣🤣🤣
Every “trans right” is actually an attempt to force others to do things they don’t want to do.
Conservatives do a better job of complaining about the state of the market than of actually buying books. Young men have mostly migrated to gaming, which provides a similar entertainment experience while still allowing them to imagine themselves as the hero of the story.
The market for male-oriented conservative fiction is badly fragmented. If you look for it, you’ll mostly find it in the small press and self-publishing areas. You have to hunt for it.
But they don’t have the right to jam it in our face over their psychological problems.
This is a false distinction created by neo-marxists and leftists. So-called "trans" have the right to be safe in their homes and persons like anyone else. They have the right to free speech, and property, and guns, etc... also like anyone else.
During his reign, Obama talked about negative vs. positive rights in his typical neo-marxist framing. The theory is, we live (or lived) in a country with a Constitution of negative rights - things that could not be taken away from you and things that government could not do.
Rather, these neo-marxists claim "positive rights" also exist. Through their own invention or discovery - things government MUST do for you, or must do for the invented group to which you belong, or things that society, or others, must do for you.
Such rights are infinite, and therefore, expressly political in nature. Gays have a "right" to free HIV drugs. Blacks have a "right" to discrimination on their behalf. Women have a "right" to the same income as a men, whatever that means. That is the nature of gay and "trans rights" - the right to proselytize, the right to promote their sexuality to children, etc....
Does “March 31st Day of Trans Visibility” mean we can go back to ignoring those freaks the rest of the time?
Murder They/Them Wrote
Well-played BTW
Good comments— the problem with these types of “rights” is that they create set of victims. For example having the right to self identify is useful, but if I have a right to create my own persona, then I can identify myself to take something of value from you. Rights are not meant to do this.
If my running ability would win the NCAA 10,000 m race and get a full scholarship to a first class university then you self identify as female and enter against me. While you would only place 40 in back of the field n the men’s classification, you are more than capable of beating me. How do we decide whose right is to be preserved?
That's why such rights are "infinite" and always ultimately political.
If you hate Trump, favor open borders, or $Billions through the USAID, in 2025, that will be enough for the left and woke government to promote your "rights."
“My guess is that C.J. Box will not be indorsing this group.”
He already made a big enough misstep when he let Hollywood have a shot at turning his books into a TV series. His characters seem very dedicated to heteronormative lifestyles so I hope that continues.
I am disappointed by the listing of Baldacci as one of the supporting authors. I generally like his stories.
