France

** La Marseillaise – Scene from Casablanca selected more for the video clip than anything else.

** Dominique -Sœur Sourire (The Singing Nun)

** Je Ne Regrette Rien -- Edith Piaf

** La Mer (Beyond the Sea) – Charles Trenet

Italy

** Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare) -- Domenico Modugno

** Prisencolinensinainciusol -- Adriano Celentano-- This one deserves a comment: It was written by the Italian singer, but contains no English or Italian words. It mimics what English sounds like to a non-English speaking Italian.

Japan

** sukiyaki -- Kyu Sakamoto

Mexico

** la bamba-- ritchie valens I found no video of Richie Valens performing this song.

Cuba

** guantanamera -- joseito Fernandez

Germany

** Mackie Messer (Mack the Knife) – Lotte Lenya Note: In Bobby Darren’s famous version he pays tribute to Lotte Lenya in the revised lyrics

"Y'know, one day, Tito Puente will be dead, and you'll say, "Oh, yes, I've been listening to his work for years."

The background ‘riff’ always reminds me of Heart of Glass.

Today I learned that Obrigado is Portuguese. If only I knew a Portuguese waitress who could help me make sense of the rest of it. I need to get out more.

“Nella Fantasia” is a song sung in Italian based on the theme “Gabriel’s Oboe” from the film “The Mission”. The music is by composer Ennio Morricone and lyrics by Chiara Ferraù. In this recording it is sung by Chloe Agnew of Celtic Women.

That first song in Japanese to be a top hit in the US ——Sukiyaki—— was one I hadn’t thought of in decades until hearing it as I had a music network oldies on a few minutes.

NPR story:
Song was about lost love and sadness of the singer.

“The lyricist Rokusukay Ey was looking back on the failure of the protest movement in Japan,” he says.
