Against Post-Election Infantilizing (of college students)
James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal ^ | November 25, 2024 | Mark McNeilly

After the 2016 election of Donald Trump as president of the United States, many faculty at universities canceled classes, either due to believing that they had to take time to deal with their own disappointment or that students needed time to process their negative emotions. Other professors took class time to allow students to “process their feelings” and deal with what was perceived as a devastating event for all on campus.

In 2024, some faculty followed the same playbook at universities such as Harvard, Michigan State, and UPenn, among other institutions, by canceling classes or using class time to deal with anticipated student emotions. This was a mistake for a number of reasons.

Let us start with the faulty assumptions made by faculty who are canceling their classes or using them to deal with students’ emotions.

Myth I: Every student in their class is devastated by the results of the election. Given that Harris lost much of the youth vote (18-29 age range) compared to Biden in 2020 and beat Trump only 52 percent to 46 percent, this is a faulty belief. Certainly some, if not many, students in these classes favored or voted for Trump.

Myth II: Students who were disappointed with Trump winning are not mature enough to deal with losing an election. They therefore need time to handle their emotions because they cannot function otherwise.

I was a freshman in college when I first voted - for Gerald Ford. I didn’t like Carter but I somehow kept it together and came up with some peanut jokes.

Someone help me out. What, exactly, do they think will befall them because Trump was elected? A roaring economy?

I’ve lived through the horrible economies and nation wrecking regimes of Carter, Clinton, Obama and biden, and while it sucked big time, I and all my conservative family and friends were able to handle it like adults-

The left are showing why they are the party of immature emotionally unstable people

It’s a good thing that college towns have endless armies of shrinks and baby sitters. College students tend to be really weird sissies and wussies.

Lower gas prices and food prices and prices for everything inbetween... oh the horror! What kind of tyrant would lower costs so that average Americans can afford them again?

infantizing the students is part of the agenda

it impedes their maturation into adulthood

recall that infants are both dependent on the Powers that Be but are also very compliant most of the time
and incapable of mounting any greater real rebellion other than perhaps an occasional temper tantrum

outside of robotics, infantile Units of Productive Labor and Manipulatable Useful Idiot voters
are exactly what these communist indoctrination centers (university campuses) want to produce

We really need to put Victor Davis Hanson in charge of University federal funding.

These crazy leftist academics are trying to ruin America.

Their diplomas are not with the ink they use to print them.

THe need to Call all their studets together and tell them:

“WE WERE WRONG”

Or else fire them for cause.

It's not just post-election. That's just when it becomes more noticeable.

There is a general process of infantilization going on.

I think this is probably not a myth.

Any school that has taken a student’s tuition money should be required to refund a prorated portion of it every time it cancels a class for a bullshit reason.

Women will have to dress like discount Strawberry Shortcake.

All military uniforms will be designed by Hugo Boss.

The democrat paper bag test will continue to be used but in reverse of how they are currently using it.

All immigrants will be deported. If your ancestry does not go back three generations you will be thrown out.

All people with Hispanic last names will be deported.

All Atheists will be executed.

All social services will vanish including state and local.

Putin will be our new overlord.

That is what they think will happen.

And that is just a collection of what I have heard. I am sure there is more.

And not be involved in any wars.

And be able to be safe from illegals murdering or raping American citizens.

I’m an old, old gal now, and I remember when college-aged and even younger boys were responsible for flying bombers through flak and enemy fighters to drop bombs on their targets...and then going back through the flak and fighters to get back to their base.

Imagine hiring one of these entitled, crying buffoons for your business, no wonder so many of them end up getting fired:

Here’s why companies are rapidly firing Gen Z employees

New York Post, Sept. 2024

"Many companies have fired Gen Z workers just months after hiring them and several business owners said they are hesitant to bring on recent college graduates due to concerns about their work ethic, communication skills and readiness to do the job, according to a new survey.

Six in 10 employers said they have already let go recent college graduates this year, while one in seven said they are inclined to refrain from hiring new graduates next year, according to a survey conducted by Intelligent.com."

I was on a gunboat in Vietnam when I was the age of these whining pusillanimous snowflakes. Trump wouldn’t seem so bad to these kids if they had to sleep surrounded by sandbags.

It’s not like either side has had a long run in Presidential power since the postwar era began. Any person thinking that’s going to be the case at this point in time is delusional. Knowing that one has to be adult when one’s side loses. The trouble is when you make politics the central core of your being a loss is devastating and hence what we see on the left by the true believers at least is the result.
