A Florida woman was arrested on animal cruelty charges and other counts after allegedly killing another woman’s pet spider by drowning it in a fizzy drink.
Ilena Rasmussen, 43, faces counts of animal cruelty and petty theft after ending the life of a jumping spider in a situation that resulted in her being charged on July 29.
According to The Miami Herald, Rasmussen’s roommate was the first to notice something wrong, and potentially criminal, had occurred.
On July 15, the roommate arrived home to find her pet spider and its enclosure missing entirely.

I have no problems with jumping spiders. I had one that made a trip on my dashboard across Texas to Hobbs, New Mexico. He made the trip back with me with no problems. He even jumped on my steering wheel at one point and just stared at me.
A spider cannot be a pet. The human may be under a delusion and think it is.
So, declaring an insect to be a pet gives it protection by the law? What about that ant that I saw on the sidewalk? If I had given it a name, then my neighbor could be thrown in jail for stepping on it?
Delusion and insanity rule the country.

the woman should claim that she was only trying, per request of the spider, to transition it to a spotted owl, but the operation went sour, and she should be awarded, not charged with trying to convert the spider to an owl

Yep- they are actually quite intelligent spiders- and very curious spiders-
What if I grabbed one of the billion or so cicadas flying around and kept one as a pet? And someone grabbed my pet and ate it? Would I be able to call the cops on him?
The other billion don’t have names, so it’s OK to kill them.

I actually have a tarantula. The lazy person’s pet, really - feed it once every few months at minimum and just make sure there’s water.
She’s almost 20 years old and started off as my husband’s. She’s incredibly docile, and just wants to find the warmest apot on you and hunker down.
But the fact that this was someone’s pet makes this rather egregious. If this was a bird or even a snake drowned in ginger ale, you would probably feel differently.
When do people start going to jail for killing somebody’s pet vegetable?
