Is that poor dude OK? He's no longer in any pain, and never will be again.

There’s a wakeup call for you. Your EV has these same batteries...and lotsa other things blow up, too.
To: ProtectOurFreedom
We should probably detach the battery and move it somewhere else, NOT by elevator!!!

Nice pics on your profile page. Have you ever played at the Tumbleweed Music festival (folk) here in Richland?

Since e-bikes are by law not considered motor vehicles you won’t find a highway use liability policy, but an umbrella policy could cover general liability.
Unfortunately, liability coverage is now required for motorcycles in my state now which is a pain since I’ve got so many vintage bikes

True that!
Note to self…”Do not carry Big lithium batteries onto elevators.”

The elevator had nothing to do with it. That is just stupid.

We need to start teaching basic physics in school again.

I just have to think that an unattended battery pack runaway is going to be an extremely rare thing especially when the bike’s “ignition” lol circuit is open which is normally going to be the case when the bike is in storage.
My own Chinese e-MTB has an 17.5 amp hour battery (48V) and only a 2 amp charger resulting in a C rate so low the risk of overheating or overcharging seems remote. I would not leave the charger plugged in all the time like some people do, though. And I have no interest in riding when it’s cold and am careful when it’s hot.

Ok, thanks for the report. Although rare, I guess you can get idiosyncratic failures with anything.

“You think electricity won’t travel through the air?”
With the voltages involved in an e-bike charger and the impedance of the air across a room?

How about 5-10 people in an elevator with their lithium ion powered cell phones?

WOW! Poor guy. Imagine bumper to bumper traffic. Worse yet, imagine door-to-door traffic...

I watched a video over six months ago of a guy who filmed his first test drive of his E bike. He got about two or three miles when he had to stop at a red light. The bike started spewing out white smoke. He jumped off the bike and a passerby in a car asked if he was ok. He said it was fine just got too hot. As soon as he said that the bike burst into flames. It was funny but not for the guy who spent thousands on the bike. The bike was stock and it was in the US.

You’ve got to wonder on these brand new e-bikes bursting into flame if they used a non-terminating charger and left it on for days and days. Or, like anything, it could have been a defective charger or battery.

Also, I wonder if that guy got a warranty claim on the bike. A cc: of a note to the CPSC might help.
