The Trump Campaign Peaked Too Soon (Opinion)
MSN ^ | July 2024 | Elliot Ackerman

With the end of their convention, the Republican Party and Donald Trump have reached what in military theory is called the “culminating point.” “The culminating point of victory,” according to the Modern War Institute at West Point, “is the threshold when military advantages peak and then rapidly turn into disadvantages.”

As an infantryman, I was taught that the culminating point is a paradox; it’s a moment of maximum vulnerability at a time when you believe you are at maximum strength. Let’s say your platoon has just taken a hill. Exhausted and jubilant, you’ve achieved your objective. Your troops have sent the defeated enemy fleeing down its reverse slope. You stand triumphant atop that hill. Psychologically, you’re vulnerable to believing two things: that your victory is complete and that your enemy no longer poses a meaningful threat. The temptation then becomes to destroy the last of your enemy, to take more ground. If you do this, if you don’t recognize your culminating point, if you try to remain on the offensive too long instead of setting up a good defense, you become dangerously exposed to a counterattack by a regrouped enemy.

…To win, Democrats must regroup and counterattack.

He doesn’t need revenge against Biden - Biden was a puppet of the Left, just like Obama was and just like Clinton would have been.

No matter who their puppet is this time, our revenge will be Trump winning for the third time in a row.

He beat the crap out of Biden in the debate. What else might he have done? Do the Rope-a-Dope and let Biden win?

And, in effect, he defeated Biden in the campaign for the presidency. With that obstacle behind him, he will re-charge and defeat the next candidate the Dems put up.

LOL! The Trump campaign has just begun! He didn’t even have a VP pick until a few days ago.

Actually, the other side’s situation should be much more worrisome for this writer

But Trump did defeat Biden...Biden is gone because Trump beat him that debate handily.

Excellent point

Trump should have waited until after Biden was nominated to debate him

Brilliant

“Wait till the Anchorbaby Kamala starts crisscrossing the country...”

I don’t think her handlers can take the chance of sending her out for campaigning. She’ll suddenly have to visit the border at least once a week, and work on other urgent stuff since Joe’s not up to it now.

Kamala is going to be declare the winner. On November 6th. It’s inevitable. The only question is, what are We The People going to do about it?

Well, like it or not, Kamala Harris is the de facto president. Not to bring you to an even darker place in your psyche....

Trump will have more fun with Kamala, and I doubt she’ll do any better in a debate than Biden did. Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Whites all know what a skank she is. Pundits and cartoonists have never had such an opportunity to show off their skills and originality. It’s going to be interesting.

Since Biden is staying in until the end of his term, I’m more concerned with the damage he’ll do...what he (Obama really) will jam into law, send arms and money to our enemies, tell them our secrets they haven’t told them already, etc.

agree...so i’ll revise my comment....many Dems simply won’t vote. I think the abortion issue is no longer a big Dem deal...i.e., we all are going to live with it as a state issue. AND the Federal Government shouldn’t be involved in financing abortion in any way. The Dems have no vision for the future....none...

“ What will Israel do? Who will make the decision on our side to stand back and let it happen or to neutralize it (if we still can)? We don’t have a president with a functioning brain. Will Israel attack Iran? Will there be some kind of nuclear exchange?”

Good thing it’s not our problem.

The author is a former Marine officer who worked in the Obama White House. Military officers tend to see political campaigns as being like military campaigns and suitable to analysis as such. Businessmen usually see campaigns as a form of business. Policy wonks and lawyers tend to seem them as intellectual contests. And so on.

Analogies though can mislead if applied too seriously. In truth, political campaigns are a thing in themselves, much different on the inside than they appear to outsiders.

To a remarkable degree, the GOP convention unified the Republican Party behind Trump. This is a tremendous advantage for Trump and the GOP. They will build from the enthusiasm generated in Milwaukee. It is not the "culminating point" of Trump's campaign to use Ackman's military term but is a battle won, a task accomplished well, and an asset that will earn a high rate of return.

If, like Ackman, one still prefers to think in military terms, the obvious culminating point of a political campaign is the close of voting on election day. It is never anything else. That is when campaigns end and the votes are counted.
