In the wake of two high-profile building collapses last year, the City Council will pass a bill Thursday that overhauls the Department of Buildings’ inspection system by requiring the agency to investigate properties proactively.

Which city? Always add the location of the city if not given in the headline.

I thought it might be a good idea if they actually inspected the buildings before they were occupied instead of just taking the permit money and then rubber stamping the occupancy certificate. Take a look at the residential building going on in Arizona right now. They must do inspections from space.

Makes me wonder how much of New York City would be left standing after a mild 5 or 6 magnitude quake? Anything bigger and I suspect half the buildings will collapse.

Building owners learned a long time ago that NYC was third world—bribe the building inspectors and there are no issues.

Cash is king—no credit cards!

Good point—the rubble reminded me of Rochester or Syracuse.

I believe this is NYC. However, the city of Seattle, WA (I live in a suburb of Seattle) has started denoting buildings for demolition. Their reason is fires. There have been a spate of fires in these old buildings. I'm pretty sure it is because of the homeless, breaking into them and starting fires to keep warm, which then spread throughout the entire building. They (the City) have already designated quite a few.

Aye, that is a pet peeve of mine as well, mea culpa. However, everybody knows what the City is. If you don’t know, I can’t explain ;).

Given that a substantial part of it is “prewar,” that seems not unreasonable.

The new law will require the Buildings Department to proactively inspect properties for structural flaws, in response to the partial collapse last year of 1915 Billingsley Terrace in the Bronx (pictured), and the full collapse of a Manhattan garage.
