Deputy Who Killed Airman Roger Fortson Has Been Fired
AmmoLand ^ | June 4, 2024 | Dean Weingarten

On May 3, 2024, Deputy Eddie Duran shot and killed Senior Airman Roger Fortson when Fortson answered the deputy’s demand for entry on a domestic violence call. The initial review of the body cam video was discussed on AmmoLand.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) has completed its administrative internal affairs investigation into the shooting. The findings of the investigation were released on May 30, 2024. On May 31, the Sheriff’s office announced Deputy Eddie Duran had violated the Sheriff’s Office policy and had been terminated (fired) from his position. From the Okaloosa Sheriff’s Facebook page:

SHALIMAR, Fla. (May 31, 2024) – The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) has terminated Deputy Eddie Duran following the completion of an administrative internal affairs investigation into the death of Roger Fortson on May 3. The administrative investigation determined the deputy’s use of deadly force was not objectively reasonable and therefore violated agency policy.

The Final Investigative Report (FIR) by the Office of Professional Standards (internal investigation by OCSO) is detailed and professionally done. It is separate from the investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The scope of the internal investigation is limited to whether the deputy violated agency policy. Other agencies will determine if criminal actions occurred.

Several things become apparent in the detailed Final Investigative Report. The neighbor who reported the domestic disturbance created most of the drama. She based her concerns on hearing one voice (apparently Roger Fortson’s) through an air duct. She gave the apartment leasing agent the apartment number but was unwilling to contact the police herself. When the fatal shots were fired, she contacted the OCSO directly.

An unfortunate chain of events. The deputy allowed himself to be psyched out by hearsay.

Yes,what happened to the Airman was horrible...inexcusable. My understanding of the incident strongly suggests that the culprit here was the person who directed the cop to the wrong apartment.

Very unfortunate that the deputy over reacted to the situation.

It seems to me, if they fired him, maybe they have enough to prosecute him too.

The firing was the result of an internal investigation at the Sheriff's office.

The potential criminal investigation is being done by an outside agency of the Florida State Police.

Back the blue, till it happens to you. My Air Force officer son, tells me all the Air Force people he works with, are quite pissed off about this. It’s good an outside agency is looking into this.

“Terminated (fired) from his position.”
His position but not from the force? He probably has some cushy job
in the front office. I hope the bastard is sued out existence.

You have to wonder if the neighbor SWATted the vic because of some personal beef. If so, she hit the jackpot, outcome-wise. Sociopathic, but leaves her unmarked.

Never answer a door to a cop with a gun visible. Lots of people get shot that way.

“Never answer a door to a cop with a gun visible. Lots of people get shot that way.”

Then never answer the door to cops. Tell them to go get a warrant and also prepare to defend yourself if they invade your home anyway.

We the People are armed. You cops need to calm down and get used to it.

An unfortunate chain of events. The deputy allowed himself to be psyched out by hearsay.

Yet, these law enforcement agencies NEVER do what my local sheriff's department does: call on the phone first to see what's happening. Ninety-five percent of the time they know who lives there. If you're LE, a phone number is easy to obtain.

Maybe it's a different scenario because I live on a large farm, and there are several buildings on the property. But, even though I have a "No Trespassing" sign on the front gate, they still come through, but they never proceed that last 200 feet up my driveway to my door without trying to call me or honking the horn first to see if I'm home or try to locate me. I've never shown any animosity to local LE, and I personally know half of them anyway. But still, this is what they do.

Now, if I'm the one who called them, it's a whole different ball game.

In some training for cops , the command to fire is “GUN”! I believe this results in the sight of a gun being prompt to fire. This has resulted in blue on blue friendly fire when one cop sees cop in street clothes with gun. Seems like a bad idea to open door with visible gun. Better training needed by LEO and civilians.

That training is bad. Murderously bad. Willfully evil.

Again, We the People are armed. You, the cops, are servants. Get that through your thick skulls.

Seems like a bad idea to open door with visible gun.

Seems like it's my door to my house on my property. My servants in blue livery had best learn to mind their manners.

Better training needed by LEO and civilians.

1) Start by eliminating the murderously bad training given to police.

2) Next, public servants should remember that they are peace officers and servants of the people.

3) Finally, peace officers need to get through their thick skulls that they themselves are civilians; they are not military and they are not an army of occupation.

You are an adult and can do whatever you want. PS, I’m not a cop and never have been.

Better yet never open the door if he has no warrant.

Perhaps the police should take a chill pill?

There is this thing called the Second Amendment. We the people are armed. And when someone bangs on your door and yells "police" that does not mean they are actually police.

Anyone can yell police. That does not mean that they are police.

I know that. I have many flaws but an overabundance of trust is not one of them. If someone is banging on my door and say’s they are a cop there better be a squad car with flashing lights in the driveway. He better be in uniform and show an ID when I look through the door window. If I have a gun with me it will be out of sight before I open the door. If he wants to come in he must have a warrant. Yes there is a 2nd ammendment but there are also nervous cops who are (in some places rightly) scared that they will be ambushed. It makes NO SENSE to be flashing a gun in that situation. That’s just me. You handle the situation the way you want.

Did he KNOW that it was a cop? I know the cop announced, but you can’t know what was “heard” INSIDE the apartment.

Also, what if the person “claiming” to be a cop, was NOT?

BAD SHOOT! No 2 ways about it. Video is DAMNING for the cop.

One good thing about this, at least the cop didn’t shoot the dog too.
