The Borderline Dance team, a regional women’s country line dance team, was invited to the Emerald City Hoedown in Seattle last weekend to perform by event organizers, the Rain Country Dance Association.

The team shared a statement on Facebook:

I wore a flag tie with my uniform for many, many years. I only got positive comments about it (many, in fact), and never once got a negative comment.

I get it-—Would wearing a hat with a cross on it be disrespectful or would depict my respect for Christ?

I look at it the opposite way-—a picture of a flag on my shirt or hat or whatever, shows my respect for what it stands for and not the actual flag. We wear items to show our support for the meaning behind it——I have a Jesus “fish” tattoo as a reminder of the Love of Christ and nothing else. On occasion, it sparks the conversation of what Christ has done! Without Christ the tattoo is meaningless, but it’s what it stands for means everything. Without those that died and spared everything is what’s behind the flag, but without them the flag means nothing.

The bottom line, is we both are passionate about respecting the flag——though different, we believe what the flag stands for deserves the utmost respect.

I too am triggered when I see an American flag. I weep for what once was the greatest nation on the planet. I weep for the memories of being a Boy Scout and the patriotism that was instilled in us. I weep when I think how proud I was when I was selected in school to be a flag monitor and the pride I had saluting it after it was raised. I weep for the memories of my father who gave his service in the Korean War and came home debilitated for life but never regretted what he gave as a true patriot and to the day of his death loved this country and the freedom it represented.

The correct response is, “we are so sorry that the America flag offends you. If you feel that you cannot go on in the competition, you should feel free to withdraw to a safer space and leave the competition. Thanks so much for coming. Perhaps try again next year”

We left the Seattle area a year ago. I can’t walk 50 feet in my new neighborhood without seeing an American flag. I LOVE IT!
