Oregon’s Drug Decriminalization Experiment Takes a Dark Turn: Fentanyl Crisis Sparks State of Emergency
Citizen Watch Report ^

Oregon, the pioneering state in drug decriminalization, faces a fentanyl crisis prompting a state of emergency in Portland. Despite hopes that a more compassionate approach would address addiction, the reality has been starkly different. Measure 110, passed in 2020, shifted focus to addiction and recovery, with police issuing citations for public drug use. However, the law’s effectiveness is under scrutiny, with overdose deaths rising since its implementation.

Governor Tina Kotek has declared a 90-day emergency order for fentanyl use, establishing a command center for better coordination between emergency management and health services. The move comes after nearly a thousand accidental overdose deaths in 2022, raising concerns about the impact of Oregon’s unique approach to drug-related issues.

All that dope is flowing in from China via Mexico over the non-existent border, the one that Biden and Mayorkas erased. American lives don’t mean a thing to them.

A liberal social experiment with tragic unintended consequences? Who could have possibly predicted that would happen!

Just another branch of the Democrat’s government displaying it’s total inability to govern. The only real ability they have is to blame someone else for their failure or ask for more tax payer money to “fix” the problem.

If drugs were to be decriminalized and legal gambling increased, then things like welfare and socialized medicine and other government handouts for the most part should have been abolished.

Government only rewards its own failures. The bigger the failure, the bigger the increased funding.

shifted focus to addiction and recovery, with police issuing citations for public drug use

The "citation" provides absolutely NO incentive for the person to WANT to recover from addiction. Instead, it enables them to continue their addiction. There are endless resources providing food, shelter, clothing and care for addicts who then are free to focus on the sole pursuit of scoring drugs. Every time I see somebody drop a dollar into the bucket of an "exit ramp" beggar, I see somebody basically buying drugs for an addict.

Our society has lost the will to FORCE addicts to recover. With FORCE meaning prison, monitored probation, involuntary mental health commitments, etc. We use the term "compassion" when it actually means "enabling".

Rampant drug abuse is like a large black cancer just decimating this country. I think we're screwed.

“Despite hopes that a more compassionate approach would address addiction, the reality has been starkly different.”

There is no greater destroyer of society than what I call, “pathological compassion”. The type of feel good “compassion” that ruins the receiver, the giver and society in general.

This is a great example of it.

It’s been a long, slow process. This was done by a vote of the people. That comes down to getting 50% +1 of the people that actually vote. Which is about 50% of those that bother to register, which is about 50% of those eligible.

Hand it out by the scoop full for all I care. China will send as much as we need. People know a very small amount of that poison will kill you, full stop, but they’ll do it anyway. Once stupidity was outlawed, society ceased evolving.

Recovery from addiction is pretty hard.
Expensive and long, excruciating process with rather small percentage of success.

The best solution is NEVER try!

Kind of the Nancy Reagan “just say NO!”

These people message is “Be safe, if you choose to do the drugs!”

That is just an invitation for young people to try - “You can be safe, you know!”

Huge mistake!
Like everything lefties do.

People change only when they are ready to, not before. It is an internal thing, there has to be a compelling reason.
