In September, an invitation by Governor Noem of [Sou]th Dakota, followed by a response from Governor Newsome of California, illustrates how people use numbers to lie with statistics.
The Governor of South Dakota, Kristi Noem, invited more gun manufacturers and gun owners to come to South Dakota and take up residence.
PIERRE, S.D. – Governor Kristi Noem invited California gun manufacturers and law-abiding gun owners to move to South Dakota to escape California’s gun and ammunition tax , which Governor Gavin Newsom signed as the first such tax in the country.
“Why would anyone want to live in a state where your Second Amendment rights are infringed?” said Governor Noem. “South Dakota has been setting the standard as the most Second-Amendment friendly state in the nation for years. Our firearms industry is thriving. Unlike Governor Newsom, South Dakota respects our God-riven rights. So if you are a California gun manufacturer or law-abiding gun owner, we are ready to help you make the move!”
On X, formerly Twitter, Governor Gavin Newsom replied:
South Dakota has a 59% higher gun death rate than California.

Why expect anything else from Gruesome? His whole life is a lie.
If you look at the last five years of data, the average California murder rate is 4.8 to South Dakota’s 2.8. Using the actual, not rounded numbers, California has murder rate 1.69 times as high as South Dakota.
OK....and those stats apply to a state with few,if any,gun laws vs a state which holds the 2nd Amendment in open contempt.

Newsome doesn’t need statistics to lie. With him, lying is genetic.
Article mixes up South Dakota and North Dakota. Don’t know if it’s just a typo, and the statistics are actually right for SD, or what.
California resigned from America. North Dakota did not
"Gun death rate" includes suicides and also includes perps shot by police or shot in self-defense. It makes sense to people who assume the gun is the problem, rather than the criminal.
Two errors where North Dakota is substituted for South Dakota, which were corrected in this excerpt. The difference between South Dakota and California is clarified in post #4.

This is why we have to reject the term "gun violence". Guns are not the issue. Violent offenders are. Instead of "getting guns off our streets", the issue is to get the criminals off our streets.
North Dakota, South Dakota, same thing.

Correct. The creation of the term "gun violence" was to direct legislative attention to guns. By focusing on guns, the problem is defined as guns.
This is classic manipulation of thinking by Orwellian phrase creation.
