SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — More Californians with untreated mental illness and addiction issues could be detained against their will and forced into treatment under a new law signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, a move to help overhaul the state’s mental health system and address its growing homelessness crisis.
The new law, which reforms the state’s conservatorship system, expands the definition of “gravely disabled” to include people who are unable to provide themselves basic needs such as food and shelter due to an untreated mental illness or unhealthy drugs and alcohol use. Local governments say current state laws leave their hands tied if a person refuses to receive help.
The law is designed to make it easier for authorities to provide care to people with untreated mental illness or addictions to alcohol and drugs, many of whom are homeless.

The problem is, Democrats define Conservatism as a mental illness. Those who depart from belief in the Biden regime’s talking points are defined as ‘conspiracy theorists’ who are mentally ill. Lately there have been some calls on the left to finally make it official and ‘forcefully’ ‘deprogram’ Republicans. So Newsom is pointing to ‘gravely ill’ people while in fact targeting those, for example, declined to ‘vaccinated’ even after being told millions will die if we don’t.
Obviously, Gavvy is is pre-presidential-run mode, so he pivots to a rare common-sense measure. Ultimately, though, something like this is truly needed. The streets of S.F. and L.A. are filled to drug-crazed lunatics... and that’s not even counting the homeless. But seriously, it’s just common sense to recoganize that there are lot of people out there on the CA streets who absolutely do need to in some kind asylum and/or live-in drug rehab program.
Conservatorship law, huh? Those are already greatly abused. I can’t wait to see how this turns out.
I've seen my share friend.
Are they people who want help, though?
I just came out of three and a half years in the mental health field. It would be nice if we could wave a wand or speak an incantation that makes a person have no more mental illness. But that's not going to happen. And often the biggest obstacle to better mental health is that the patient isn't willing to work toward his or her recovery.
It is impossible to help someone who refuses to do their own part in recovery.
Coercion, disguised as cure.
It needs to be called “incarceration”, not “help”.
State conservatorship. This will be used against people of means with whom the state ideologically disagrees.
“The problem is, Democrats define Conservatism as a mental illness”
And we them.
But well said. They are arguably more successful painting/encapsulating the public picture of “conservatism as mental illness”. We’re the weirdos. Marxism is normalized, because if it opposes conservatism it’s the signpost for whatever the hell non-mentally ill is.
“force”?
I don’t like that word when connected to this govt.
One of the biggest problems for recovering addicts are the friends they keep.
Medical types and union thugs are natural Nazis.
The reason there’s been such a large homeless problem over the past 40 years is because keeping loons committed was made illegal.
Institutions were emptied nation wide over the course of some years and surprise, surprise, homeless all over.
How ‘bout Canada, where they can get their anti-psychotic medication for free.
Mentally ill and addicted,as to where to put them, they’re already mainly on the west coast. Shipp the east coast liberal scum there, wall it off and hope for the big one.
Hillary said MAGA supporters need to be “de-programmed”. Democrats always paint a normal rosy picture of what they want (like getting mentally ill off of the streets) and end up militarizing it against partisan enemies.
Sounds like a good idea.
But what will happen is the Democrats will use this to put political opponents in looney bins.
Any government will be abused by them.
Sixty years after JFK set out to federalize mental hospitals and put the mentally ill into our neighborhoods, California is taking a step away from him.
Does the law include people who think they are different gender? Asking for a friend.
