X is remarkably different than Twitter was. I used to be able to roam freely on Twitter without revealing who I was.
Today X is shutting me down from seeing the latest comments and news. You only get to get two year old comments if you don’t sign in and tell Twitter who you are.
My hunch is Musk laid down the law: “Nobody gets to see stuff on X unless a sponsor paid for it OR we have intelligence (or identity) on the person who wants to see the post.”
This is Musk’s gambit for making X profitable. The issue is whether X can sustain this course. Sounds like the recent challenge by Mega (Facebook) has no legs.
Media properties these days are a crap shoot it seems. Look at the fragility of Fox network. Disney is struggling to keep its premium channel subscribers.
But good things may evolve out of this evolution towards a more competitive media sphere. You’ve got people like Tucker Carlson who is playing the media titans against each other and becoming a more significant force than when he worked for Fox.
So why did I get to see this X post of Pence? Either Pence paid for that access or a political opponent did. And whoever paid for that probably specified that viewing would be allowed for only a limited time — to non-X members.
This is my thinking. Any thoughts, FReepers?
