So as the title says, I'm looking for some help in relocating to South Carolina. Mostly with just getting a job; I shouldn't have much trouble finding a place to live. I'm in Brooklyn, NY and work in the security industry; a fire and life safety director to be specific. We're responsible for handling any emergency that happens in our building until the incident commander takes over. It's a huge responsibility. The lack of communication and general lack of professional behavior from a few managers that we work with has really soured me on the job as a whole, and I want out.
I'm looking to get back in to office administration. I'm more comfortable in an office, instead of being on alert for basically my whole shift, having to run to the fire command station every time an alarm happens. I do have some years as an administrative assistant; it's been a while, but it's not like I'd be going in blind and getting thrown to the wolves.
The security company I work for is terrible - you're basically on-call 24/7, and might be sent to another building, even if you're not certified for it. That's a big no-no as far as the fire department goes. Like if you're certified for a hotel, but you're in an office building, they want someone with the proper certification for that office building. I know it's also blowing them up, but they're flying by the seat of their pants, paying out overtime in cash. It's extremely poorly run, and they're taking on contracts they can't properly staff. It sucks and it's depressing, I'm not at all happy here.
I'm more than willing to learn new things, like software and skills. I'm not comfortable with making travel arrangements though; last time I went anywhere was to visit my friend in Charleston last summer, and that's why I want to move. South Carolina would be preferable, but I'm open to the whole of the south. Generally better weather, definitely nicer people, and a lower cost of living. It's also more aligned with my personal beliefs, which is why I'm on here despite having lived in Brooklyn for most of my 37 years.
Any help would be hugely appreciated, as you'd be helping a fellow FReeper achieve their goals and restart life.
Well, that could be useful to get a job in a related field or even a factory or other facility that would have full time occupational health & safety staff.
Fort Mill,SC is very close to Charlotte,NC. Many job openings can be found in the Queen City.
“Number One Rule when seeking new employment: Never Knock Your Current Employer. Period. Ever. For Anything.”
Absolutely. Immediately, prospective employers tag you as a difficult person, whether you are or not.
We moved last month about 20 miles from our old place in TN. Have been in TN for 13 years.
This morning we met a new neighbor who was out for a walk. After a 5-minute chat where he did all the talking, Hubby asked, “What did he say?” I had no earthly idea.
Sounded like a NOLA accent. But he said he was from here.
A lot of Kansas looks flat but its a gradual rise all the way to Denver. Tilted just a smidgen.
I spent several years as a kid in Huntsville. Loved it!
My favorite places are the coast of South Carolina and Georgia, lots of places in Florida, and the mountains of North Carolina.
All along the coast of SC and Ga there are great places to live, notably Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Beaufort, Hilton Head, Savannah; Bryan, Glynn, and Camden Counties, Georgia.
In the NC mountains, Asheville dominates of course, but there are many nice places to live, some though are remote.
You'll probably receive a big welcome, especially when everyone realizes that you are level headed and decent and have no intention of bringing nut-case values (and voting tendencies) to the South.
There are lots of recent transplants. The ones like you receive a big welcome.
BTW, a few years ago my plumber hired an assistant from Brooklyn. He told me repeatedly how glad he was to get out of NY, especially because of his children. But he was so nasty that we referred to him (behind his back) as Mr. Grump. He was a very good plumber though, so we stuck with him. Fast forward a few years, and Mr. Grump has blended in really well. We no longer refer to him like that. He's even got a sense of humor. Now, we're glad to see him and are like best friends. He just needed a little decompression.
Also a classmate of mine who is Jewish, moved from NYC to upstate SC. He and his family immediately fit in and lived happily ever after.
And a man and woman who are friends of my wife and me moved to Charleston from upstate NY. They were naturals--stayed there forever.
There are may anecdotes.
Come on down.
Someone mentioned Kansas and I have a comment as it relates to Security. ProtectionOne bought ADT but kept the ADT name due to the higher name recognition. They have broken some of the ADT bad habits and their HQ is where ProtectionOne’s HQ is — Wichita, KS.
Additionally Allied Security has technical service office in South Carolina. They are one of the biggest and acquiring new branches all the time.
Grits is are good, but you don’t put syrup on them it.
My brother-in-law married someone from Michigan. She loves Charleston.
You might check out Savannah too. It's much like Charleston, maybe not quite as expensive.
Keep your accent. Don’t try to learn a new one. There are many different accents all across the South. There always have been. Most Southerners descend from Northerners who moved South. It’s been going on since the Colonial Period, and it still is. Nobody pays much attention to accents in this day and age.
When, as a boy, I went to Camp Reese, an Episcopal camp on St. Simon’s Island, you could tell where many of the boys were from by their accents, especially Savannah, Augusta, Charleston, and Jacksonville. The accents were very distinct. They have probably faded a bit because of mass communication, travel, etc., but accents do very greatly across the South.
I do not agree with that at all.
I have never known anyone to do that.
It never occurred to me to consider where someone was from when evaluating an applicant. I was much more interested in many other things.
That is not true. And if it was, no one would admit it.
What English class did you go to?
My Mother's family is from Massachusetts. They moved South before the Revolutionary War.
My wife's grandmother is from Iowa.
My sister married a man from Ohio.
Most of my Father's ancestors immigrated directly to the South from Europe, but even he had a few Yankee ancestors.
Sorry to break such a painful truth to you, but there it is.
Only a relatively small percentage of the Southern population got off the boat in the South. Most migrated from the North during the last 400 years.
You're right about that. It's referred to down here as.. "DON'T be a PUSHY NORTHERNER!"
Allied Universal is known for security, I want to get out of the industry.
