Why did they need to qualify this by adding “hydrochloride” to “cocaine”? I had to look this up, and in every practical use, “cocaine” is just “cocaine” and “cocaine hydrochloride” is also just “cocaine”. It seems fishy that they’d tag on this unneeded and never used qualifier without a reason.
Sounds more hazmatty that way.
You know why they added it. If they say they found cocaine everyone will have the same thought. Hunter.
I’m a chemist and I know that cocaine is converted to a salt (cocaine hydrochloride) in order to increase its solubility in water or other bodily fluids.
That’s why many pharmaceuticals are distributed as a salt or salt solution. The most common salts are chlorides, sulfates, tartrates, or sodium, potassium, magnesium, or calcium salts.
Well, I am glad you looked this up. Because I was of the same thought. Why or what exactly is this?
Cocaine hydrochloride nasal solution is used to numb the mucous membrane inside the nose before a medical procedure or surgery.
Cocaine hydrochloride is a pure version of cocaine. It is also known as cocaine hydrochloride salt and can be dissolved in water to make a solution.
Cocaine hydrochloride has approved prescription drug forms in the United States and other parts of the world. It is legally available as a nasal spray and a topical (skin) solution. However, it can be habit-forming even in this form.

Reporter probably gets paid by the word, therefore the use of hydrochloride to pad the article.
