The New York Slimes, Washington Compost, Newsweak, BBC, Radio Free Europe, Deutsche Welle, etc. are shameless Leftist, Globalist, Bidenista, Pro-Ukraine propaganda sites. They are merely tabloids to be ridiculed.
Ukraine clearly had more to gain by the dam’s destruction.
Michael McFaul. LMAO.
At least you admit that you are an Anti-American, Bidenista, paid troll.
I’m embarrassed for you. You are to be ridiculed.
LMAO - love the Bee.
You’ve got some drool on your chin. You might want to wipe it off.
Yeah, right there. OK, a little more to the left. There! I think you got it all.
“Ukraine clearly had more to gain by the dam’s destruction.”
In what way?
This hampers a crossing of the Dneiper more than does a trench system.

I am Ukrainian. My country has been invaded by Russia. In this video I will tell you what happened on the four hundred and sixty sixth day of the war.
Day 468: Jun 06
Today the biggest news comes from the Kherson region. Here, due to the partial destruction of the Kahovka Hydroelectric Power Plant, the water has wiped out dozens of settlements and islands and caused a huge ecological and humanitarian problem.
The dam is an extremely powerful structure that can only be damaged by planting tons of explosives.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that this is exactly what Ukrainians did. Defense Minister Shoigu reported that Russian forces completely defeated the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the Zaporizhzhia region, Ukrainians decided to compensate for the losses by redeploying everyone from the Kherson region, and because Ukrainians were afraid that Russians would take advantage of the empty front line and again capture Kherson, Ukrainians blew up the dam.
The Ukrainian side responded by pointing out that the hole in the dam is located in the middle, and since Russians had destroyed the bridge on the Ukrainian side, only Russians had access to the middle section of the dam, and only Russians could transport tons of explosives.
Ukrainian officials claimed that Russians decided to blow up the dam because Ukrainians had gradually established control over all islands and were ready open a second southern front and conduct an amphibious operation.
In fear that they would not be able to cope with the Ukrainian offensive in Zaporizhia and Kherson simultaneously, Russians blew up the dam and wiped out all Ukrainian positions on the islands.
Interestingly, some Ukrainian sources pointed out that the same occupation officials that blamed Ukraine at first pretended that there were no explosions. The news about the explosion started appearing at 2 am.
At 3 am, the occupation mayor of Nova Kahovka reported that the news about the explosion is fake and that he is in the town and confirms that the night has been quiet. 50 minutes later, he said that Ukrainians were shelling the dam all night and damaged the flood-gates.
The analysts concluded that Russians tried to make a relatively small hole in the dam to flood only Ukrainians on the islands. Close to 4 am they understood that they had screwed up because the power of water gradually amplified the destruction, and the top part of the dam started to fall apart.
As a result, the Ukrainian counteroffensive from the Kherson direction is temporarily canceled. The river is 4-5 kilometers wide, so Ukrainians will be spotted and destroyed before even getting close to the other side of the river. Right now, Ukrainians are conducting an evacuation of their troops and ammunition that they shipped to the islands.
Interestingly, Russians are doing the same. Because the flood turned out to be much bigger than expected, a lot of Russian positions were gradually cut off from the mainland and turned into shrinking islands. In the morning, many Russian social media channels started warning all Russian soldiers that they had only 2 hours to leave, not 3 days.
This means that Russian forces were PRELIMINARY informed to abandon their positions, however, because the timing turned out to be off, not all Russians soldiers could be saved on time, and many of them were wiped out by the current.
Because the flood turned out to be much more severe, in the long run, Russian may even end up inflicting more damage to themselves. Some Ukrainian analysts reported that many parts of the first line of Russian defense have already appeared underwater.
Most of the ammunition and equipment will not be saved, the trenches will be turned into pools, and the fortification along the bank will be wiped out. The water is expected to recede in around 2 weeks, and it is unlikely that Russians can resupply the whole Kherson group.
Simultaneously, as the water level upstream is rapidly dropping, the width of the river in this region can shrink to the point where Ukrainians will unlock a new direction for an amphibious attack and will be able to pick the place on a 250 km front instead of just 70.
Such an attack will be even more destructive to the Russian plans, as they will not be able to deploy enough troops to police the whole eastern bank, while simultaneously defensing against the counteroffensive in Zaporizhia.

The destruction of the dam hurts Crimea and the Russian side. The side of the dam that blew was controlled by the Russians.
One thing is certain: One cannot believe the Western fake Propaganda “media”and their Ukraine lapdogs.
“One cannot believe the Western fake Propaganda “media”
If your complaint is Western media, please note these articles and videos on this forum thread are NOT from U.S. sources.
I am asking for details and military-operational reasoning, from you.
In what way is Russia harmed by this more than Ukraine?
In the current war the Crimean canal is irrelevant. Crimea does not have an urgent need for irrigation water, and that is not going to help or hinder a Russian defense of the remainder of Kherson or Crimea.
Ukraine, on the other hand, is prevented from crossing the Dneiper, for weeks if not months, precluding offensive actions from that direction.
Please pardon:

Putin is probably planning to pull out, and wants to leave Ukraine with lots of problems when they take Crimea. Also this makes it a lot harder for Ukraine to focus on the Donbas warfare.
Possibly. But for now I’m chalking it up to the Russian boots on the ground getting their excuses in early in anticipation of a retreat.
The dam has been weakening over weeks or months, with Russia fully in control. If Russia actually thought strategically, that would’ve been a “hearts and minds” opportunity. Nobody in the world would’ve thought badly of Russia if they’d simply said Ukraine’s experiment in the fall is about to result in the dam failing, and if they’d called out for assistance or even a DMZ agreement with Ukraine to avert a disaster.
Instead the evidence is all over Telegram that soldiers were ordered to booby trap the crossing, that there were explosives under the water line, and nobody was treating a dam breach as anything more than an opportunity to frustrate Ukrainian forces crossing the river.
Talking heads on Russian TV calling for dams and HEPs to be destroyed - repeatedly - only validates the warnings from Zelenskyy that Russia WANTED the dam to burst.
Then there’s Russia pulling its people out of towns along the south side of the river... As if they were expecting a major disaster.
The most optimistic view is, it looks like the dam was so unstable that one small explosion on/in it would’ve cracked it. Either Ukraine or Russia could’ve caused this, entirely unintentionally.
A more realistic view is, Russia knew that dam was going to crack, and was preoccupied with how they could benefit militarily. They kept alleging Ukraine was going to attack the dam but Ukraine doesn’t appear to have taken the bait.
Expectations may have been, a minor breach would scupper the advances across the islands downstream without hurting the Russian occupied region.
The sudden U-turn in the Russian narratives suggest exactly that. Initially they claimed credit for the explosions successfully repelling a Uke attack. Initially they scorned suggestions that anything big had happened.
Only after the scale of the damage to the dam became undeniable did they scurry around claiming one minute that a Uke drone did it, the next that a Uke missile did it.
Here's the Azov Nazi scum you're gushing about. Gross. You should be ashamed of yourself.
It was already reported that Russians were controlling the water levels behind the dam, and after keeping it quite low for a while had built it back up to a very high level, to do the most damage. Comment #108 gives a very detailed explanation of how Russia’s explosion ran away from them and caused much more damage than expected. Especially to Russian fortifications and supplies east of Kherson.. In addition, lowering water levels in the upper river will be easier for Ukraine’s troops to cross now by special means.
“NONE of this benefits Russia???”
How does Russia shutting down Ukraine’s power plant benefit Ukraine. It just happens to be the largest one in Europe so is a huge power loss for Ukraine. I’m sure Putin is happy.
Gates were closed to allow the water level behind the dam to build up to a very high level, which as you describe in comment#8 probably caused the power of the breach to get away from Russia’s more rational goals. Poor Pooty, again.
I doubt this scenario too. The whole powerhouse complex was demolished. You can see the whole structure is gone, and the water is running through the channel where the turbines were.
A demolition on the dam side could have caused the destruction of the dam, but not the powerhouse.
It wasn’t generating for Ukraine, that I know of.
I don’t think it was connected to the Ukrainian grid. That would have conflicted with the Russian campaign against the Uke electric infrastructure of a few months ago.
