The decline of California under one-party Democrat rule has been one of the long-running themes of this blog. Today Victor Davis Hanson discusses how California’s wealthy destroyed the middle class with policies whose baleful effects they knew wouldn’t fall on them.…

“The irony is that, as we created more wealth and more leisure, because of the very success of the middle class citizen, the middle class citizen and his central role in western government was forgotten.”

“California in the 1960s had the largest middle class in the United States. California had the finest educational system. California invented the idea of a modern freeway and a modern airport.”

“California had a state where two-thirds of the people lived with one-third of the precipitation, and yet they built the greatest transference of water with reservoirs and aqueducts the world had ever seen….

Residency means nothing.

Race/ethnicity is everything. High school class rank and essay are the way they make sure only the Favored Non-Whites get into UC and even CSU schools.

SATs arent considered, course content is meaningless, advanced math/science even less important.

African or Mexican/hispanic ethnicity is the only thing they are interested in.

Look at CSULA student demographics. Almost 90% “hispanic”.

Even Harvey Mudd is 30% hispanic, which is comical: does anyone really think that a hyper competitive technical school with 800 students would somehow end up that way in a truly unbiased system?

The California legislature is controlled by Mexican nationalists who have one thing in mind when they dictate budgets to the UC/CSU systems: ice out Whitey. Steal what he built.

In their world, only the weak let go of their property. If you are strong enough to take it, it’s yours.

I think the image of them was always based on a fantasy.

They were portrayed as spiritual, esoteric, humble...just poor but ethereal beings.

The truth is that they’re no different from the rest of the planet: grabbing what they can get.

Everyone forgets the Han descend from Ginghis.

Harvey Mudd is private but it used to have very high standards. It also has a 50% female student body which is another indicator that it has dropped standards in the name of diversity.

it is private, but of course they get federal/state money for research and other pograms...so they get enormous pressure to “diversify”.

The result is that a degree from there is now meaningless.

This reads just like the Starnesville parable in Atlas Shrugged.

Jaime Escalante was an educator who was born in Bolivia and came to the United States in the 1960s to seek a better life.

He began teaching math to troubled students in a violent Los Angeles school and became famous for leading many of them to pass the advanced placement calculus test.

They deliberately wanted to do it. For them its a celebration of execution of a successful plan.

“One-third of all the welfare recipients in the United States live in California

Lived in California for 30, that 1/3 figure surprised me.
