UPDATE: I did not know about the Nashville school shooting until after I sent out this story. I did not intend to make a political statement of any kind about the victims from the Covenant School. I pray for the families and the school.
As president, Donald Trump privately pushed for banning AR-15-type rifles, according to a new report. Trump was — and is — a big defender of Second Amendment rights. So the new revelation is surprising that he tried to renew the “assault weapon” ban during his first two years in office.
The news about Trump is buried in a lengthy story in The Washington Post on Monday about AR-15 style rifles. The report says he tried multiple times in 2018 and 2019 to get support for a federal “assault-weapon” ban.
“I don’t know why anyone needs an AR-15,” Trump told aides as he flew on Marine One to the White House in August 2019, according to a person who heard his comments. As one former official put it in describing the real estate developer turned politician, “His reflexes were a New York liberal on guns. He doesn’t have knee-jerk conservative reflexes.” But Trump was also petrified of the NRA and others taking him on, former advisers said, and heard from a number of advisers that it would be unpopular. Trump ultimately stopped entertaining the idea of working with Democrats on gun control later that year, when he was caught in a scandal over his now-infamous phone call with Ukraine’s president. “F--- it, I’m not going to work with them on anything. They’re f---ing impeaching me,” Trump said in one Oval Office meeting, according to a participant.""In the summer of 2019, after back-to-back mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso involving an AR-15-style pistol and an AKM-style rifle, Trump told aides that he wanted to ban AR-15s, according to people present for the statements.
The AR-15 is a style of rifle. The FBI crime statistics for 2021 show there were 11,628 people killed by guns, and 447 of them were by rifles of any type. The bureau does not track the style of the rifle.
A spokesman for Trump, who is running for reelection in 2024, did not deny the remarks. From The Post:
"Steven Cheung, a Trump spokesman, did not respond to detailed findings in this article but said that “there had been no bigger defender of the Second Amendment than President Trump.” He said that Trump had offered other proposals after mass shootings, such as adding security guards to schools and allowing teachers who are licensed to carry a weapon to do so."
Trump’s bipartisan gun control
While this reporting from The Post is from anonymous sources, it lines up with Trump’s public comment in 2018 in a bipartisan White House meeting on gun control measures after the horrific school mass shooting in Parkland, FL.
Trump told Sen. Dianne Feinstein in a live TV meeting that he would look at her “assault weapon” ban bill. It caused an uproar with the pro-gun groups that helped get him elected. I cued up this video to watch him tell her:
NRA protest
The Post reported this meeting and one other in more detail:
He mentioned it on live television to one of the Senate’s most vocal gun-control backers, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), and in a private meeting with Parkland families. His comments rattled NRA officials and some of his own advisers. NRA representatives later warned Trump against taking action. “They came up here and said to him, the base is going to blow you up,” according to a former official who sat in during a series of meetings with the NRA. They, like others interviewed for this article, spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private interactions.""Shortly after Parkland, President Donald Trump repeatedly floated the idea of supporting a new assault weapons ban.
Trump supported the NRA in the same 2018 meeting with Feinstein and others (transcript here): "I’m a fan of the NRA. I mean, there’s no bigger fan. I’m a big fan of the NRA. They want to do it. These are great people. These are great patriots. They love our country. But that doesn’t mean we have to agree on everything."
The not agreeing on everything is a reference to the issue of raising the federal minimum age for owning a gun from 18 to 21 years old.
Imagine the Supreme Court if we were in Hillary’s sixth year in office.
Hmmmm……apparently you haven’t thought this through nor do you understand legislation. And lastly, you don’t understand what DC can and cannot do, namely, telling states what to do.
Nor do you understand state legislation. Half of the laws passed by DeSantis are weak and subject to lawfare. Some will be struck down. Most laws are contested in court and drag on for years.
It is troubling that your real focus is merely lip service. Lip service is important but it has no real effect when it comes to forcing change. We are all troubled by the fascism, marxism throughout government. If you really want results, spend your time pressuring congress. DeSantis or any other president cannot remove marxism. Only parents can because it starts with the brainwashing of our children in public schools.
We can do better than Trump? Just going back to 2016 for the moment, who do you think on that debate stage would have done better than Trump? Jeb, Chris Christy? Now fast forward to today. We have Nikki Hailey, and that other guy whose name I can’t remember, and among the likely to run, we have Pompeo, Pence, and DeSantis. Is there anyone among that lot that you actually believe is not a RINO?
You’re getting worked up over remarks. Like I asked in another post. What ever became of those remarks? If you’re going to judge a politician by his remarks rather than his performance, then Bush Sr. would get high marks. Remember “No new taxes”? With a new candidate, all you have to go on is their remarks. With Trump we have a 4 year history to look at. Sure he made mistakes. Show me a politician who hasn’t. But what of his successes? We haven’t had a president in years who has kept more promises than Trump.
I shudder to think of it!
It was firepower. Not equal if I remember correctly.

‘Trump gave alot of lip service and hired globalists’
———————————
Yes he did.
Lip service: Presidents can only give lip service. They are the cheerleader, the salesman. Their job, and the party’s job, is to convince the public what is good for the country. Republicans don’t do that but Trump did. Can Trump or DeSantis pass legislation? Nope. Can they dictate what states do? Nope. That’s the part you need to understand. DeSantis has more power as a governor than he would as President in terms of domestic issues. Why do you think Trump couldn’t even stop sanctuary cities or stop rampant crime? DeSantis can’t either. The only power a president has is foreign relations and even that can be sabotaged by bureaucracy and politicians. We’ve seen them do it repeatedly with Trump. Kerry, McCain, Graham made many visits to foreign countries to undermine Trump.
Hiring Globalists: DC is 92% democrat. That is where all of the high level employee pool lives. There are no good people in DC. Many of Trump’s hires had to be affirmed by Congress RINOs. How many people do you think he had to choose from? Do you think there were any ‘good’ people qualified enough to run a government agency with thousands of employees? I guarantee that DeSantis will have the same type of cabinet. He won’t have any other choice. These people are lifers, they float from agency to agency. You can’t pull someone off the street and expect that they can run an agency. Ben Carson, a very good and honest man, struggled running his agency initially. He had alot to learn and because he’s brilliant he was able to get up to speed. How many people that are brilliant and good would be willing to give up their job, move to DC, and face a large learning curve for a job that is only 4 years long? Because the next admin will fire them. So many here think it’s a cake walk in DC, I hope you start seeing the truth. Take your ‘I hate Trump’ glasses off, and learn more about how DC works.
Act like DeSantis is already president and the trials and walls he will face. Mueller and Comey worked under Bush. Did they seem as evil then? No. Were they evil people? Yes. But they didn’t use that evil against Bush for whatever reason. They did against Trump. Many folks Trump hired hadn’t shown their evil yet. Once hired, they went crazy. And the RINOs did as well.
If they fear DeSantis like they did Trump, he’s toast. If they don’t fear him, then he’s a Bush. And if he’s a Bush, it will be too late. GOP is dead.
“He may have learned…”. Trump doesn’t learn. He only knows what he knows.
Trump wrote about wanting to ban assault rifles in one of this books.
Big FAIL, Drew.
Who could argue with that? Wait...what?
Noob smells funny! Smells like a retread kind of funny.
Re: 191 - okay. What book?
Donald Trump: ‘I don’t know why anyone needs an AR-15’
—
City folk, what can we say?
I agree completely.
Desantis is more conservative than Trump.
Trump’s sons are avid shooters and have significant arsenals. Trump is the least of my worries when it comes to firearms.
So, what you’re saying is that Trump would be right to cr-p all over the Second Amendment because it’s politically expedient to do so. Sure sounds RINOy to me.
DeSantis is a global warming disciple
