Rep. Matt Gaetz on Wednesday called on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to resist any attempt to haul former President Donald Trump back to New York to face criminal charges.
In an interview with News Nation, the Fort Walton Beach Republican said Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s efforts to indict Trump are politically motivated and will likely make Trump stronger in the long run.

When did the Secret Service get moved from Treasury to DHS?
“18 USC 3182: Fugitives from State or Territory to State, District, or Territory
Text contains those laws in effect on March 21, 2023
From Title 18-CRIMES AND CRIMINAL PROCEDURE
PART II-CRIMINAL PROCEDURE
CHAPTER 209-EXTRADITION
§3182. Fugitives from State or Territory to State, District, or Territory
Whenever the executive authority of any State or Territory demands any person as a fugitive from justice, of the executive authority of any State, District, or Territory to which such person has fled, and produces a copy of an indictment found or an affidavit made before a magistrate of any State or Territory, charging the person demanded with having committed treason, felony, or other crime, certified as authentic by the governor or chief magistrate of the State or Territory from whence the person so charged has fled, the executive authority of the State, District, or Territory to which such person has fled shall cause him to be arrested and secured, and notify the executive authority making such demand, or the agent of such authority appointed to receive the fugitive, and shall cause the fugitive to be delivered to such agent when he shall appear. If no such agent appears within thirty days from the time of the arrest, the prisoner may be discharged.”
George Washington had a slave as President who left his Philadelphia home.
However as she did not flee from another state, he could not recover his chattel.
In 1987 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Governors can’t block extradition, period. If the paperwork is filled out correctly, then extradition is mandatory. This whole business of calling for DeSantis, or any Governor, to block extradition is nonsense. Of course it looks like it’s probably a moot issue, Trump is reportedly going to fly to NY and surrender.
Didn’t they (Florida) “shelter” OJ Simpson? There was something about that. That’s why he moved there.
DeSantis could make himself a hero by making a statement like:
“The free state of Florida does not take orders from New York.”
That is the best plan.
Ridiculous and uneducated Comment .
NO GOV can stop a legal extradition .
In 1987, the supreme court made it illegal .
This fact has been a dozen times here .
Not true again .
OJ moved to FL to hide his money .
FL has very friendly bankruptcy laws .
No Governor can stop a legal extradition .
Please stop posting this nonsense .
“it is a pretty fundamental part of our federal system that a person accused of a crime in one state cannot hide out and seek sanctuary in a different state...”
There actually are circumstances where that can happen, but this doesn’t look to be one of them. However, maybe it needs to be. The left is great at eliminating checks & balances, so maybe we need to look for ways to create new ones.
I think his exact words were I don’t take orders from soros funded lawyers
“NO GOV can stop a legal extradition .”
True, but is an extradition for an unlawful political prosecution a legal extradition?
That appears to be an open question that has not been settled.
Unnamed source.
You want FL to "deliver up" Trump to NY as the Constitution states?
What NYS law violation is Trump going to be charged with?
Doesn’t matter, Bragg can get an Indictment on something. Taking it to trial is another matter. If they actually want to arrest Trump in Florida they can. present a valid warrant and move for extradition, at that point Trump can try and fight the extradition , it then is up to a court to rule on that warrant and extradition. The Governor’s office has no input here to interfere with this process.
To what end. Da Santis is no hero.
It doesn’t work that way. Trump wants a spectacle. He wants total Chaos on this. He isn’t going to fight any kind of extradition.
If Trump is going to be indicted for a crime, having it be a real spectacle would be huge PR victory for Trump
He will play the rigged game and the Establishment out not get him but the citizens of the game, he would be correct to play it that way
One thing Trump can do is put on a show and this would be a huge show
You need to read up on all of this as far as Extradition is concerned, DeSantis has Zero control over that process and cannot interfere.
