DC Rumor: Mitch McConnell Might Never Return to the Senate
Independent Sentinel ^ | - March 15, 2023 | By M Dowling

According to the NY Times, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell had been under observation since suffering a concussion during a fall on Wednesday. He also has a “minor rib fracture,” his office said. He’s off to rehab and rumor has it that he might never return.

Mitch McConnell could be sidelined.

A spokesman, David Popp, said that the lawmaker’s “concussion recovery is proceeding well” and that Mr. McConnell, 81, had been discharged from George Washington University Hospital, where he was taken after the accident at the Waldorf Astoria on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington about 9 p.m. Wednesday.

“At the advice of his physician,” Mr. Popp added in a statement, “the next step will be a period of physical therapy at an inpatient rehabilitation facility before he returns home.”

D.C.. resident and radio host Chris Plante said on his radio show this morning that Mitch is in rehab and might never return to the Senate. That would be great news, but then, who replaces him?

We wish him good health and happiness, but not as a Senate leader.

The Kentucky Governor must pick a member of the GOP. I hope Mitch is toast.

“Who would replace him, Mitt Romney? “

Look at the current leadership positions under McConnell for the next Republican leader in the Senate:

John Thune (age 62) of South Dakota is the Senate Minority Whip so he would be a logical choice. Senator John Cornyn (age 71) of Texas was the previous Republican whip.

John Barrasso (age 70) of Wyoming - Chief of the Senate Republican Conference

Joni Ernst (age 52) of of Iowa - Republican Policy Committee Chairman

Shelley Capito (age 70 of Wyoming - Vice Chairman of Senate Republican Conference

Steve Daines (age 60) of Montana - Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman

. . .not just the elderly. I’m 61, had a fall last Friday morning, and am **still** laid up. 30 years ago, I would have just walked it off, but 5 days later, still need a walker and am still in substantial pain....

The Constitution was changed with the passage of the 17th Amendment, so the Governor no longer has that replacement power of US Senators unless permitted by the State Legislature. Currently 45 of the 50 State Legislatures authorize their Governors to appoint a replacement Senator, however five States require an election to fill a Senatorial vacancy. There are also other requirements and exceptions which can be found in this Congressional Research Service document.

My money's on Mizz Lyndsey. After all they both "swing" that way.

It is quite normal anymore for old people to be released to an inpatient facility. They stay a couple weeks and return home.

McConnell had polio when he was younger.

Yes his Democratic replacement thanks you for the prayers. Kentucky has a democratic governor who will replace Mcconnell until his term ends which is January 2029.
