I don’t blame people for siding with the stepmother.

How rude of her! She is going to regret it later on in life. Just think of all the joy she is going to miss in the future after deliberately refusing to spend time with her grand-child. When you marry someone who already has children, you make a commitment to the children in addition to the spouse, just as you do to any child born to the two of you. Sometime that involves sacrifice on your part.

Even natural children sometimes go through stages of rebellion with their parents. When they offer an olive branch a parent should take it instead of taking the “revenge” route. Their relationship will never improve if they do the tit-for-tat route.

It was already there. My horrific daughter called when her fiancé’s parents wanted to do the parents meet. Then again for the fitting g of her gown...me and someone to be her emotional support person while being with me. Then once to show up for the wedding. I kept showing up for her things thinking there would be a breakthrough. There wasn’t.
Now her sister has joined her and I am person non grata as they suck up to their millionaire other parent.
Done.
Don’t waste time on them

So...is her parrot going to take care of her in her old age?
At this point, the stepdaughter will probably just pull the plug and I can’t say that I’d blame her.

It is not revenge, it is knowing someone has not changed so you would rather not stick your hand back in the bacon slicer thank you very much.
This was not an olive branch. It was a demand that her father's wife drop everything and come take care of her.
Some people have Welcome stamped on their foreheads.
Others got smart and washed that sucker clean.

The stepdaughter never was going to care for her.
The parrot probably will learn to replay kindness for kindness.
That is the difference between people and animals.

If she wants wedding advice, she can pick up the phone. If her father thinks someone should go stay with her, take care of the child, and all, he could go.

Why is this news?
My own family got rather... nasty before my wedding. Mainly because the rest of the family might show up.
That being said, it was a wonderful day 20 years ago

An alternative excuse besides "I need to wash my hair", I guess.
She obviously wanted no part of that scene. As I don't know all the particulars, I cannot judge.

There have always been kids that were users. But when you had a half dozen kids you might have a couple that turned out all right.

Yep.
Usually I am in the you do what you can for your family camp but when someone has made it clear they don't want you involved unless it is to their advantage and they will probably treat you like dirt while taking advantage you.... You have to draw the line somewhere.
You want to repair your family relations? Good.
Do it before you are all needy.
