For a century, 1850-1950 young intelligent women, having few employment options, joined the teaching profession. They were in large part responsible for the growth of this nation, both politically, economica1ly and socially. Following WWII new employment avenues opened and the brilliant ones, who once became teachers, had new job opportunities. Instead of the brightest going into the teaching profession we now had the most stupid seeking education degrees. And just as night follows day, greatness was followed by mediocrity.
What have parents got?

Luckily it is only THAT TEACHER with that horrific attitude, the one over there, not here. And certainly not any of the teachers in the ‘wonderful’ public schools that my children attend...why the teachers at our ‘wonderful’ public schools are the salt of the earth, the greatest people since sliced bread.

That's exactly right, and part of that common sense is knowing you'll make mistakes, but you'll always try to do the right thing for your children. And they don't list their PhD in common sense after their names, or around like a trophy -- their titles are simply Mom and Dad.

Two of my father’s sisters were teachers in one room school houses when the government pushed to educate all children in the 1920’s.
They graduated high school, went to college for the summer, and started teaching that fall following graduation from high school. They then were required to go to college every summer until they completed their degree.
Both went on to get advanced degrees during their approximately 50 years teaching.
My father was born in 1910 and I in 1957. We both had the same first grade teacher. Like farming, teaching gets in your blood... it becomes a love.
I used to joke that after teaching (full time at the university for a few years) I would never get a real job!
Parents have children. You probably do not.

Nope…degrees are meaningless when it comes to real life situations.
