US military hires 700 recruits who have faced behavioral challenges

After revisiting its policy on which medical conditions bar applicants from joining services, the US military for the first time has permitted 700 recruits with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to enlist, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

In June, the military, which has been facing major recruiting challenges, said that those who had suffered from 38 different medical conditions could serve as long as they hadn’t demonstrated symptoms nor required medication for treatment for three, five and seven years, depending on the condition.

These conditions – which include congenital heart defects and tuberculosis – were previously automatic disqualifiers.

The Pentagon stated that it will evaluate the performance of its new programme in six months time so that it had a year’s worth of data to analyse.

“We want to be cautious,” the WSJ report quoted Army Secretary Christine Wormuth as saying about how the service admits those with mental-health challenges. “I think we have to constantly be refreshing our approach and looking at conditions in this society,” she added.

These changes come amid one of the Army’s worst years for recruiting and as military officials are debating ways to enlist qualified recruits who have been treated for mental-health conditions.

The service fell 15,000 recruits short of its fiscal 2022 goal and it cut its goal for total number of soldiers in fiscal year 2023 by an additional 15,000, suggesting that it sees a longer-term problem, added the report.

According to Army data, only 23 per cent of young Americans meet the physical fitness, health, and other requirements and less than 10 per cent of them are interested in joining the military.

Only 700?.......................

They were going to do 100,000, but there were too many fat kids... also they decided that number might be a little too obvious.

Our once great institution that kept Americans feeling safe and protected, has been destroyed by the rat cancer that spreads its poison in every crook and cranny of our government.

What planet have you been on? Do you think the armed services haven't taken criminals in the past? Or people were given a choice between jail and the army?

The pearl-clutching here is unreal.

Trades are an excellent avenue as well. We’ll be upgrading infrastructure for a long time.
Electricians, linemen, HVAC, plumbing, cablemen, etc.

Giving people a choice between jail and thw military is not the same as "taking criminals." But you know that.

A professional, volunteer military, dfending our nation's freedoms and stated traditional values, wouldn't have any need to lower standards to make recruiting goals.

But i will say what I've said nearly the enitre time I've been on this site: the only enemy our military will ever be allowed to truly destroy, is us, or, possibly more likely, people like me.

Should have never gone to a volunteer military….

With the draft all people were being drafted…the elite had there kids in the military….

With elite kids not in harms way there more likely to go to war…

Francis has, officially, joined The U.S. Army. But, call him Psycho. Anyone who calls him Francis, and he will kill them.

We’ve created this Kobayashi Maru. We want those who won’t work (generally because of mental issues) or have committed minor crimes to serve in the military or take on available menial jobs, yet when they are pushed into the military or menial jobs we don’t want them there. We don’t want them in the military and we don’t want to interface with them in the service industry.

We’ve long allowed certain convicted criminals to serve in the military in lieu of serving time behind bars. Really, not much difference.

“The pearl-clutching here is unreal.”

Yup.
I know two guys who were real hell raisers until the judge got tired of their escalating antics. It was when they stole a fellas tractor and made it a burned up tractor. The judge offered them extended stays in the gray bar hotel or one enlistment in the USMC. They took the enlightenment. Both ended up spending a year in Vietnam. One of them had the pleasure of helping liberate Hué City during Tet.
Both of those guys came home and made real solid citizens. Married and raised great kids. Both praised the USMC for turning their lives around.

You are exactly right. When people with ADD/ADHD are interested in something, they are REAL INTERESTED. If such a person doesn’t have any co-morbidity issues, they will likely be excellent performers. That is a fact.

Yeah, that was during a draft for an unpopular war.

I get your sentiment, but The military is one place that can’t afford to get the wrong people in the wrong positions. Menials can still get access to classified data, like Bradley Manning did.
