I heard the "swimming is racist" bit the other day with someone earnestly telling me that in the fifties they had cemented in the public pools in the black neighborhoods.

I pointed out that they also cemented them in in white neighborhoods, brown neighborhoods and red neighborhoods because there was a bloody polio scare going on and if they had really been racist they would have left the ones in black neighborhoods open so the kids could get polio and might end up crippled or die.

He did not know what polio was.

I educated him a bit then asked him if he thought the public pools should have been left open.

He thought closing them was probably for the best.
