Insiders are stunned after Twitter eliminated 4,400 of its 5,500 contractors with no notice, both in the US and abroad, according to Platformer.

The contractors are not being notified. They are just losing access to Slack and email.

....Snip....

Elon Musk immediately fired Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal and head of Trust & Safety Legal Vijaya Gadde when he took over Twitter last month.

Hey qaz, it’s glorious to see Musk decimating Twitter’s employee and contractor ranks. And you make a good point — why is the loss of freight jobs not noticed?

In hindsight, I think Trump’s trashing of Musk as a “bull-shitter” was strategic theater.

Some distance from Trump and conservatives in general was needed to cement the deal. It took Musk’s takeover off the press’s attention long enough for tempers to cool.

And you’re right. After the Twitter take over, and mass layoffs, the Earth is still rotating around its axis.

I don’t believe not giving notice and just turning off their access is a good way to go about this.

It may be. Probably to prevent sabotage.

I wish I’d thought of it first.

And sorry about your kinfolk.

A great quote from an essay: “If college student activists, NPR, and an HR website all agree that the world should do something, that’s a pretty good sign that people should do the opposite — or at least make fun of it.”

The firings I had were relatively benign; no security guard. There was some notice, and then an eventual last day, where I cleaned out my desk, gathered my things in a box and left.

Sounds like the company really heeds some reform and he’s getting in there and doing that.

Read my post again. I said totalitarian-like systems and also said it could be benign labor saving and convenience systems.

It all depends how they are used.

I’m talking about using an app to buy everything, make all transactions.

For example simply go in to the store, load up, walk out. Payment is made automatically. Pulled from your account.

Bezos already has stores like this.

Musk stated he wanted to have a We Chat like system in the US. It an all encompassing app wherein people talk to each other, make their purchases, and even need codes to be allowed outside or to enter stores or take public transportation. All transactions made through it.

This can be either utilitarian or totalitarian. China makes it totalitarianism. I agree with you Musk seems, unlike Bezos and others, to believe in freedom.

Just so you snowflake programmer contractors know, your administration’s labor department is making it harder by the day for companies to keep you around without breaking labor laws.

There is a bi-partisan effort to do that. In Massachusetts it was one of Romney's main achievements. He pushed for the changes in the law related to contractors in the guise of his health plans. They are very much tilted against independent software contractors.

“I don’t believe not giving notice and just turning off their access is a good way to go about this.”

Why? As I understand it, the contractors were a big part of the woke problem at twitter. They did much of the manual content moderation.

If you give them notice, who knows how much damage they will do with their access before they are terminated.

It’s like when Musk froze access to the company’s code. Programmers who are going to be terminated can do big damage. I’m pretty sure some of them left some bad stuff behind in the code that Musk will discover only over time.

Twitter had a bunch of self-righteous, entitled punks working for it. Getting rid of them in not easy.

It keeps people from damaging the company on the way out.
