Take credit for what worked. Shift the blame for what didn’t. Run to Daddy-in-law whenever the big, bad chief of staff got in his way. That was Jared Kushner’s modus operandi during the long four years I had to serve alongside the man most responsible for the loss of the Trump White House.
Kushner came to the D.C. swamp on the coattails of his wife as nothing more than a young and rich, run-of-the-mill liberal New York Democrat with a worldview totally orthogonal to the president he was supposed to serve. Yet, within the West Wing, Kushner considered himself to be the ultimate “Trump whisperer.”
In private, Jared would boast about how he had brought the president back from whatever he considered the brink to be that day—whether it was securing the southern border, leaving NAFTA, or slapping tariffs on China. Never mind that he was derailing, deterring, and delaying Trump’s Make America Great Again agenda in real-time and at great political and economic costs.
Jared’s “neuter the boss” role quickly became a source of friction between us. He believed that I, more than anyone inside the West Wing, could “rile up” the president to take actions that were, in fact, totally consistent with Trump’s central campaign promises. But as this particular Wall Street transactionalist liked to say (and it always made me cringe): “That was the campaign. This is reality.”
In the cold light of a January West Wing day, there was simply no other explanation than nepotism to account for how this decidedly unqualified Clown Prince wound up sitting as a modern-day Rasputin at the right hand of Trump.

Rasputin ... Putin ...
Interesting.
Whatever - sounds like after-the-fact backbiting by a former administration official against a rival. Kushner is not going to stop being Trump’s son-in-law (as far as we know), and that won’t stop me from voting for Trump again.
“the man most responsible for the loss of the Trump White House.“
Well Trump didn’t lose so there is that.
I’m inclined to believe Peter Navarro.
There are some of us here that will believe every word of this...I do.
I never believed those here that claimed there was no infighting between Bannon and Kushner. Of course there was...and Kushner won. To the detriment of Trump
Those tongue in cheek comments by the author may be why the DOJ would go after Kushner to get him to be the mole. Kushner will sell out everyone to keep from going to prison like his father (maybe not his wife..but who knows..look at what his father did)
Not a fan of Jared, he was in was over his head.
Any one who said that should be bitch-slapped and fired.
Was Kushner the guy who convinced Trump to do absolutely nothing consequential to stop voter fraud in a half dozen swing states?
If he is a Trumpper why are the MSM not after him? Hmmmm!
So am I
Jered hasn’t been handcuffed, finger printed, disrobed and frog marched to solitary in jail…….in front of airport crowds
Peter has…….just for being an ally of the President
WOW...no idea he was so evil.
bump
Me too. Both the kid and Pence stabbed Trump in the back.
But I’m not sure I’d hold him accountable for any failings of the Trump administration. Steve Bannon probably had as many bad MAGA-type ideas as anyone else.
For a moment let’s assume that Hillary won in 2016, and she put Chelsea’s husband in a senior position. Not even knowing much about the guy, most folks here would suggest that that’s a bad idea. Nepotism of any sort is usually a bad idea.
Same goes with this Trump-Kushner situation. Just another example of Trump’s poor appointment choices. Please learn from this the second time around, Donald.
That would not surprise me. Many to blame for that but the two who are the most guilty are Barr and Wray. Two of the most despicable traitors in our history.
Don’t forget Jeff Sessions
i have no doubt that Bannon got some things wrong. Kushner might have been right about some things versus Bannon.
But I absolutely see Kushner lording his untouchability over those at the WH
There were policies that would be announced that did not fit in with what he campaigned on..I cant remember examples..but they did fit in with the types of things a previous Liberal NYer would want to see happen. Maybe they were Trump’s ideas..but probably Ivanka or Kushner pushing it.
Have to admit I was a big Kushner defender here on FR.
I. Was. Wrong.
Peter Navarro is one of the few truly brilliant loyalists to Trump. Always, always had his back and supported MAGA 100%.
I’d take one Navarro over a room full of Kushners, Boltons, Pences...
