Things politicians never talk about when they pander to Greenies.
A close friend farms over 10,000 acres of corn in the mid-west. The property is spread out over 3 counties. His operation is a “partnership farm” with John Deere. They use the larger farm operations as demonstration projects for promotion and development of new equipment. He recently received a phone call from his John Deere representative, and they want the farm to go to electric tractors and combines in 2023. He currently has 5 diesel combines that cost $900,000 each that are traded in every 3 years. Also, over 10 really BIG tractors.
John Deere wants him to go all electric and soon.
He said:
Ok, I have some questions. How do I charge these combines when they are 3 counties away from the shop in the middle of a cornfield, in the middle of nowhere? How do I run them 24 hours a day for 10 or 12 days straight when the harvest is ready, and the weather is coming in? How do I get a 50,000+ lb. combine that takes up the width of an entire road back to the shop 20 miles away when the battery goes dead?
There was dead silence on the other end of the phone.
He then asked,
When the corn is ready to harvest, it has to have the proper sugar and moisture content. If it is too wet, it has to be put in giant dryers that burn natural or propane gas, and lots of it. Harvest time is critical because if it degrades in sugar content or quality, it can drop the value of his crop by half a million dollars or more. It is analyzed at time of sale.
It is standard procedure to run these machines 10 to 12 days straight, 24 hours a day at peak harvest time. When they need fuel, a tanker truck delivers it, and the machines keep going.
John Deere’s only answer is “we’re working on it.”
They are being pushed by the lefty Democrats in the government to force these electric machines on the American farmer. These people are out of control.
They are messing with the production of food crops that feed people and livestock, all in the name of their “green dream.”
Look for the cost of your box of cornflakes to triple in the next 24 months.

Very true. Farmer’s are going experience a 40-50% reduction in yield without nitrogen though. Then translate that into the supply/demand outcome and people will be looking at a $10 box of cornflakes in 2023.
All they need is a really long/fat extension cord! [sarcasm]
Folks,
Agriculture is a fashion industry. We have to have change whether it helps or not.
Think about the fashion industry, it is change for the sake of change.
I remember dating a gal from home economics. She asked me if I knew why emerald green was the popular color that fall. Being a dumb farm kid I said “no I don’t”. She said that color was PICKED BY A COMMITTEE 4 YEARS AGO. Then the dye makers got to work, the cloth manufactures got to work, the designers got to work, marketing, etc etc.
I remembered thinking. Is agriculture a fashion industry? My conclusion was yes........................
Which is why this should be transition not over years/decades but also in application.
anything you plug into a socket is an appliance.
For the very reason’s cited by this farmer the concept of Electric harvest vehicles is DOA.
Can you run them 24 hours a day for three weeks straight harvesting millions of dollars of corn that must be harvested in a specific window of time or you lose millions of dollars?
You are correct—see my earlier post I was in error...
This has gotten beyond ridiculous.
plus John Deere is a “don’t repair it, we will..for an extra fee” company.
Whether you trim your hedges at 9:00 AM or 2:00 PM, doesn’t matter. However you have to harvest corn when it is right to get the highest price. EV’s on a farm just don’t work.
They have had non-diesel, green equipment for years, it even produces it’s own fertilizer automatically. We only need a 90% reduction in population and one out of every three people left to go into farming to make it viable again.
It's called a "battery".
If 500 yards is literally an issue for you, though, it's probably a bad idea. I own a modest handful of acres, and every tool from string trimmer to tractor burns gasoline. Batteries just can't keep up. Trying to do real farming with them is beyond insane.
We heat with wood. I would hate to try to cut all my fire wood with an electric chainsaw. I will keep my stihl 361 and 260.Thank You.
Yes
Here is the simple answer to the farmers questions.
Based upon 6 hours of useful battery charge, you will need to by 4 times as much equipment so as the batteries run down you pull that piece out and charge it up for 24 hours and use the next piece of equipment and so on and so forth.
Democrats are pushing the climate change agenda.
They’re pushing the ‘electric everything’ agenda, including electric cars.
Electric cars are being pushed by the democrat controlled government and not by the people and not by industries. Industries are following the democrat agenda out of fear.
The ‘electric everything’ agenda will eventually be known as the great experiment that failed miserably. Democrats should be punished by being kept out of government for decades.
Well you play with your little kiddie tool set at your house all you want... Step into a man’s world with heavey equipment, just go over and sit down and watch...
I wouldn’t let go of the current diesel equipment.
Pol Pot tried that...............with the very same people who are trying to force it upon us.......and the results will be the same......................
