It's the end of an era. The last Howard Johnson's restaurant has just closed. Among the amazing things I found out while researching the subject of Howard Johnson's is that famous French chef Jaques Pépin was hired by the company to improve their menu. Pépin was slated to become a chef at the JFK White House but chose to work on the Howard Johnson's menu instead. Later Pépin co-hosted cooking shows on PBS with Julia Child. This video also reveals how Pépin rendered a CBS reporter speechless.

I do not like clams, but HoJo’s fried clams were delicious!

What’s needed beyond vanilla? Could even have it put on a piece of pie.

"Certainly a tangent; but, Julia Child was an OSS agent during WWII. Personal secretary to Wild Bill Donovan. Hired for her typing skills but she was so inventive and such a masterful politician that she managed to wheedle her way into a number of important research projects. She was the 'chef' when they tried to invent shark repellent, but by her own admission she was a rotten cook until some years later when her diplomat husband got posted to Paris.
She also was 6-foot-two and wore a size 12 shoe (men's 10).

We loved Howard Johnson’s!
Friendly’s also disappearing.
The only places one can get fried clam strips.
Which means, basically we cannot get them anymore!

I finally realized after all these years that they are CLAM ROLLS!
That’s why we couldn’t find them. Wrong name.
Figured it out after being in New England more recently and a trip to a now-rare Friendly’s here.

Went to Lum’s a lot when bro was in college, but I remembered it more as a family steak house.

I grew up in Connecticut, where both HoJo's and Friendly's were a big deal. In Connecticut, plenty of ma 'n pa places and diners will serve you clam rolls (In North Haven, Dino's; in Wallingford, Captain Sea's). I think in the southeast, Captain D's carry's one as well.
Here in Phoenix, most of the good chains are available, but not Friendly's, the best for hard ice cream, MUCH better than Baskin-Robbins. Carvel was go-to for soft serve. The Friendly's Resse's Peanut Butter Cup Sundae is the best, though every time you try to order it, they think you want the inferior Reese's Pieces Sundae. Bleagh!
Both Friendly's and Carvel ice cream cakes are in the Fry's supermarket, but with a household full of people with sugar and dairy sensitivities, I cannot justify buying one.

My first radio job in Nashua, NH. There was a HoJo “just across the way” from the station. Lots of times we would sneak out for pecan pie with peach ice cream. Sounds weird, but it was great. Sometimes clams, too.

I agree. I made the comment because vanilla was the only flavor Howard Johnson’s offered.
