My Nokia candy bar is 4g and cost $40.

Does it support VOLTE (Voice over LTE)? 4G without VOLTE will no longer work on AT&T.

Anyone finding this FORCED SHIFT to 4G and 5G, SHUTTING DOWN 3G, results in worse coverage and signal ?

5G maybe a step forward in the inner city, BUT 3G is, now was, better in rural areas. I have worse calls, dropping calls, gibberish audio being forced off 3G.

"...an old fashioned desk-top..."

I'm typing this on a desk-top - but it's only around 8 months old
so it ain't 'old fashioned'. It's a 'Mini PC'.

The system unit is something like half the size of a small
cigar box - like 5 x 5 x 1.75 inches. A Quad Core Celeron -
NOT a slouch of a slow machine at all. It does the job -
and it was surprisingly affordable too.

OK, here I found a picture of the thing -

.

.

And I am using a good old Logitech K120 full size keyboard.

I am not on AT&T. My service is Jethro. I think it runs on T Mobile.

Wow. I could use that space on my desk. (Ours is a ten-year-old monster Dell...:-)

My flip phone has preprogramed text answers in it.

Yes/No/I'll call you/Thank you/See you soon, and some other things that I have never used. It is all I need.

Lol. I agree. Standing in line, waiting for a doctor, DMV, etc. have become much more tolerable with reading FR.

There is no shortage of lack of coverage out West in fly-over country.

US85

US212

US191

I-80

Likely many others

5G makes it worse.

“Think of it as a portable supercomputer that also makes phone calls.”

That’s the truth of it, if you have a SIM Card installed. Otherwise it’s a very compact general computer.

I’d love to have my “dumb phone” back (I called it my GeezerPhone), but was told it wouldn’t work after the 3G shutdown. I bought an inexpensive Nokia smart phone, but just don’t use many features—calls, and the occasional text.

I’m going in the opposite direction. I’m looking at trading in my iPhone 2020 for an iPhone 13 or 14.

RE: Rotary cell phone. My oldest brother was one of the last people to still use rotary dial phones. Back in the advent of the touch tone phone, it came with a monthly charge of $1.10. He refused. Eventually, the phone company relented and he obtained a touch tone when there was no extra fee.

If nothing else, an iPhone SE. About $429, and it’s 5G, so you’ll be able to use it anywhere. The iPhone is also better at protecting your privacy, which seems to have upset lots of big players, like Facebook. Just make sure it’s the current generation, and not an SE 2020 or older.

"... I could use that space on my desk. ..."

I've got a big flat screen monitor and full size keyboard
on my desk. So the size of the computer itself is
inconsequential by comparison. And some flat screens
now come with a bracket to mount these sorts of things
of the back of the monitor. (POOF! Footprint totally gone!)

And I would suggest 8GB of RAM (instead of 4) and definitely
the 128GB solid state drive storage option (instead of 64).
If you need more drive storage space, just plug in a multi-terrabyte
external drive to one of the USB3 ports.

(I say: 'BUY it - you know you WANT it...' LOL!)

I use a TracPhone, I think they go for around $10 or so. I like mine, no nonsense phone, simple flip phone. I’m on auto pay so I get five hundred minutes a month for around $17. To let you know how much I use it, I’ve over 50,000 minutes that have built up over the years I’ve had it. The minutes roll over so you never lose them.

I just bought the new Galaxy A53 5G from Samsung. Comes with free $170 wireless earbuds (never used earbuds but I guess they'd be handy for calls while driving).

My Blackberry Passport from 10 years ago was finally at "end of life".
