Lets see its Hollywood, they are both actors appearing on a losing audience program. Lots of ways this was staged.
Definitely a "work" and an "angle" in pro-wrestling parlance. As you pointed out, the viewership for the oscars has been declining, and this stunt gave it the necessary buzz to get people to 'care' about it again.

I figure it was staged. Easy to make it believable since everyone expects poor impulse control and violence from negroes.

Simple way to find out: Ask both Rock and Smith on the record if the event was staged/scripted/rehearsed.
My bet is if that’s done, the questioner will get a “no comment”.
No chance anyone in Hollywood could have come up w something as interesting and compelling as this. Not staged.
Even if this was staged, if a white actor had done that, and his name wasn’t Alec Baldwin, that slap happy actor would be in big trouble.

I only saw the meltdown because it is everywhere. From the pictures, it looks like they segregated the blacks from everyone else.
